Between managing marketing campaigns in Austin and coordinating local mutual aid projects, I’ve learned to distrust easy answers. So when I was walking through Naples last October and literally stumbled over a single Rider-Waite-Smith card face-up in the gutter, my first instinct was skepticism. The Five of Pentacles. Rain-slicked, bent corner, resting against a crumbling stone step near a closed bakery. My brain immediately flagged apophenia—that human tendency to see meaningful patterns in random noise. I’m trained to spot correlations for work, so I know how easily the mind manufactures coincidence.
But the timing landed heavy. I’d been reading Carl Jung’s original essays on synchronicity, where he describes it as an “acausal connecting principle.” Basically, two unrelated events happening together in a way that feels symbolically charged, not because one caused the other, but because they mirror each other. The Five of Pentacles is classically about exclusion, material lack, and being left out in the cold. Finding it there felt less like a cosmic fortune cookie and more like a stark mirror held up to the housing instability I’ve been fighting back home.
I’ve seen too many spiritual circles treat synchronicity like a personal VIP pass, completely bypassing the systemic conditions that actually create “scarcity.” That’s spiritual bypassing at its worst. If the universe is talking, it’s usually pointing at the ground we’re walking on. I didn’t “manifest” anything that day. I just picked up the card, brushed it off, and donated the rest of my coffee money to a Naples-based tenant collective.
I think urban spaces are actually prime ground for this kind of divination. Cities are dense with discarded objects, fragmented timelines, and overlapping narratives. When a tarot card surfaces in a public space, it stops being a private tool and becomes a communal prompt. I’m curious how you all handle it.
