I'm sitting here in Bozeman, half-pruning roses and half-staring at a bug in my code, and this thought just won't drop. Lately, I've been getting these "downloads" from people. Not just vibes. Actual sentences. I'll be looking at a customer, and a phrase pops into my head, only for them to say it verbatim three seconds later.
Look, I'm not trying to flex. It's actually kind of exhausting. My first instinct is to blame hyper-empathy. When you spend half your day arranging flowers, you start noticing micro-shifts in texture and light; I think I've accidentally trained my brain to do the same with people. I'm probably just reading micro-expressions and body language so fast that my Theory of Mind is predicting their speech before it happens. That's just high-fidelity pattern recognition, right?
But then I dive into my consciousness rabbit hole. I used to work in AI ethics, and we spent hours debating whether a model "understands" or just predicts the next token. Isn't that what I'm doing? Am I just a biological LLM predicting the next token of human conversation? Or is there something else? I've been leaning hard into panpsychism lately. If consciousness is a fundamental property of matter, like mass or charge, the boundary between "my" mind and "your" mind feels arbitrarily thin. Maybe there's a leakage. Maybe what we dismiss as intuition is just the signal bleeding through the noise floor of a shared substrate.
I recall reading about mirror neurons, but that feels like it only scratches the surface. It reminds me of Jung talking about the collective unconscious, though I feel like we dismiss that too quickly because it sounds too mystical for hard science. From a coding perspective, it's like asking if two instances of the same class share a reference to the same global object. If the substrate is continuous, why wouldn't information bleed?
This stuff messes with relationships, too. If I think I can hear a partner's unspoken thought, and I'm wrong, I create a reality that isn't there. That's a classic projection bias. But when it's right... man. It's unnerving. I feel like I'm drawing a Two of Swords—sitting on the precipice, paralyzed by the choice between a rational explanation and the spooky truth. I don't want to pathologize a genuine experience, but I also don't want to hallucinate powers.
