I was trimming dead roses this morning, watching the brown tips curl, when I stumbled on a Psychology Today piece breaking down AI anxiety. It hit me like a cold draft through an open window. We’re out here trembling over silicon and servers, but the real tremor is happening in the soil beneath our own feet.

I used to think fear was something you fought off. Now I see it as compost. That article put a quiet name to what I’ve been feeling: the dread isn’t really about the algorithm. It’s about what we’ve stopped trusting in ourselves. When we hand over our curiosity, our creativity, even our quiet moments to a prompt box, we’re not just outsourcing labor. We’re abandoning the inner garden.

Carl Jung talked about the Shadow as all the pieces of ourselves we refuse to water. I’ve been sitting with that a lot lately. In my own deconstruction, leaving behind the rigid certainty of my evangelical past left me with this wide-open sky and no compass. I reached for the deck instead. The Hanged Man keeps showing up. Not because I want to be stuck, but because he teaches suspension. He says: stop swinging. Look at the world upside down. The machine isn’t coming for you. It’s just a mirror. What it reflects is your own unattended longing, your quiet belief that you have to be faster, sharper, more efficient than you actually are.

I’m not saying AI is harmless. But I do think we’re treating a symptom while the root rots. The anxiety isn’t in the code. It’s in the gap between who we are and who we’re trying to pretend to be. I spend my days arranging peonies and eucalyptus, watching how plants lean toward whatever light they can find. We do that too. Except lately, we’ve been leaning toward screens that promise answers without asking us to sit in the dark first.

What’s your deck saying about this? I’ve been pulling The Moon lately, and it feels less like fear and more like an invitation to wade through murky water until the shapes become clear. Inner work isn’t a luxury. It’s the only thing that keeps us from becoming ghosts in our own houses.

I've noticed that roots only deepen when they encounter stone, yet we confuse the screen's frictionless loop for connection. That anxiety isn't your shadow staring back; it's the atrophy of a will starved of resistance. We aren't haunted by the machine, but by the silence of a world that no longer pushes back against us.
