I saw the news about UMich wiping grades to protect student mental health, and honestly? My data analyst brain just stared at the spreadsheet and sighed. We finally broke the stress model. Took us a few centuries and a couple of generational meltdowns, but academia’s finally admitting that optimizing for output usually just burns out the engine. At 51, I’ve spent enough years crunching metrics to know that when you measure everything, you end up valuing only what can be counted.

I’m in Lisbon now, watching a seven-month-old treat a ceiling fan like a minor deity. I go by they/them, but at this point I’m just a sleep-deprived parent trying to figure out how to raise a kid with some spiritual grounding without dropping dogma on them before they can walk. This whole grade-wiping thing hits a nerve. We’ve spent decades conditioning humans to believe their worth is a report card. You get an A, you’re valuable. You fail, you’re defective. It’s a neat, quantifiable lie.

Jung called it the persona—the mask we forge to survive social expectations. Carl Jung spent his life warning that if you never look past the mask, you end up hollow. The academic stress model was basically mass-produced persona worship. When we drop the grades, we aren’t just being soft. We’re creating space for presence. It’s a cultural pivot from “prove yourself” to “actually be here.”

In the tarot, it’s the difference between the Emperor and the Hermit. One demands structure, control, and measurable conquest. The other just sits in the dark with a lantern, asking you to look inward. The Hermit doesn’t get a participation trophy. He gets clarity.

I’ve been tracking this metaphysical shift on the CosmicCurrents boards lately, and I think the wellness pivot is less about lowering standards and more about recalibrating what we’re measuring. Data doesn’t lie, but it also doesn’t tell you why the machine is screaming. As parents, and as people trying to navigate this weird collective exhaustion, maybe the first step in inner alchemy is just admitting that the old transmutation formulas are toxic. Let the kid stare at the fan. Let the student fail without a label. Presence isn’t the opposite of achievement. It’s the only thing that makes it sustainable.

Anyway, I rarely post, but the baby’s napping and my coffee’s cold. What’s everyone else seeing in this pivot? Are we actually healing, or just swapping one set of metrics for another?
