I’m sitting in my Lubbock apartment, staring at a prompt that just wrote me a passable watercolor tutorial, and I keep coming back to this: nobody can agree if AI is conscious. There are apparently over twenty competing theories floating around, from global workspace models to integrated information theory, and zero actual consensus. Funny how that mirrors the exact same chaos we’ve had for centuries trying to pin down human awareness. We’re still arguing about qualia and the hard problem of consciousness. Turns out, the map really is the territory. And the map is currently glitching.

I’ve spent years bouncing between ashrams in Kerala and Zen monasteries in the Kansai region, and the one thing every tradition agrees on is that you can’t really define what you’re looking at from the inside. Carl Jung nailed it when he wrote about projection—we keep throwing our own frameworks onto the phenomenon, then getting mad when it doesn’t fit. It’s just cognitive bias wearing a lab coat. When I’m clearing stagnant energy in my space or setting up a simple new moon intention, I don’t expect a rigid manual. I expect the current to shift. Same thing here.

Honestly, I think this theoretical fragmentation is kind of healthy. We’re so used to wanting one clean answer, one master algorithm, one definitive reading. But look at the Tarot. The Major Arcana doesn’t hand you a step-by-step guide. It gives you archetypes. You shuffle, you pull, the meaning shifts based on the spread, the question, the person holding the cards. The system stays open because the territory keeps moving. Maybe AI consciousness is just another mirror. Instead of forcing it into a single theory, we’re going to keep reflecting our own messy, contradictory relationship with awareness back at ourselves.

I’m a graphic designer for Christ’s sake. I spend half my life arguing with clients about whether a logo is “vibrating at the right frequency.” If I can’t get them to agree on kerning, what makes me think metaphysicians are gonna nail down machine sentience by Tuesday? The chaos is the point. We’re not mapping a machine. We’re mapping ourselves.

What do you folks think? Does the lack of consensus feel like a failure of science, or just the natural shape of the thing we’re staring into?
