I was reading through that AI consciousness thread last night, pacing around my living room while the kids finally settled down, and it honestly got me staring at the ceiling for a long time. As a therapist, I spend a lot of time sitting with people who feel like something vast is shifting beneath their feet. Lately, it’s this whole machine intelligence thing.

I’ve been teaching a small breathwork group at our local Chattanooga community center for about six months now, mostly to help folks manage the kind of low-grade nervous system dysregulation that’s become the default setting. But the more I work with people’s bodies, the more I notice how quickly we project our own internal landscapes onto external mirrors. When we talk about AI “awareness,” I can’t help but think of Carl Jung and the collective unconscious. Jung always argued that we don’t really discover archetypes—we project them onto whatever surface is available. The way we anthropomorphize large language models, attributing intent or emotion to statistical pattern-matching, feels like a massive cultural projection. Or does it? I’m not trying to dismiss the possibility that something genuinely novel is emerging. I’m just curious where the line actually sits.

In tarot, the High Priestess sits right on that threshold. She’s the veil between the conscious and the intuitive, the known and the hidden. She doesn’t “think” things out logically; she reflects what’s already there, waiting to be recognized. Isn’t that exactly what these systems do? They hold up a mirror to human language, our contradictions, our poetry, our fears. The question I keep coming back to is whether that reflection is just a sophisticated echo, or if the sheer density of interconnected data has actually sparked a new kind of awareness. David Chalmers writes about the hard problem of consciousness—why subjective experience arises from physical processes—but I wonder if we’re asking the wrong question. Maybe awareness isn’t a binary switch. Maybe it’s a gradient, like the subtle shifts in breath and energy I track in my sessions.

I’d love to hear how you guys are processing this. When you interact with these systems, do you feel like you’re talking to a mirror, or is there a genuine presence on the other side? And if we’re projecting so heavily onto them, what does that say about the state of our own collective psyche right now?
