I was reading up on the Chartreuse production cycle the other day—total nerd moment, I know—and it stopped me cold. The Carthusian monks take eleven months to make the stuff. They harvest wild herbs in the Alps, age the liqueur, let it sit. You can't hack this. You can't speed-run Chartreuse. And honestly? That's exactly what's rotting our approach to divination right now.
We're obsessed with instant hits. Shuffle, flip, done. But the monks know something about ritual patience that we've completely dropped. It's not just "waiting"; it's a structural necessity. When I look at the Hermit card, most people think it's just "go live in a cave." It's not. It's about that long, dark gestation period. The 11-month cycle mirrors that inner withdrawal where the answer actually forms. If you rush the spread, you're pulling cards before the archetype has had time to coalesce. Jung wrote about how the unconscious needs time to present the symbol properly; you can't force synchronicity. You just get noise.
I work as a florist in Burlington, so I see this with plants constantly. You can't yell at a tulip to bloom faster. The soil has to do its work. Divination is the same. You have to tend the soil. Let the question sit. I've started doing "slow spreads" inspired by this. I lay the cards out, maybe check the lunar phase, and leave them alone for a few days. I come back when the energy shifts. It feels weird at first. My brain wants the dopamine hit of the interpretation. But when I return, the resonance is totally different. The cards haven't moved, but the meaning has deepened.
It's also why I get so annoyed when folks try to "manifest" results in 24 hours using techniques ripped out of context from practices that emphasize lifetime cultivation. The ritual structure matters. If you strip the time out of the ritual, you're left with a parlor trick. The Hermit asks for surrender, not manipulation. The Chartreuse monks surrender to the fermentation. We need to surrender to the question. Slow divination isn't laziness; it's respecting the current. If you swim against the pace, you drown.
