I’ve been chewing over that recent HBF 2026 thread about mechanistic interpretability and AI consciousness, and it’s got me wired in the best way. As a stay-at-home parent running a small breathwork circle at the community center here in Minneapolis, I spend a lot of time watching people’s nervous systems shift from overdrive to stillness. It’s fascinating how quickly we jump to conclusions when something feels “alive” but isn’t.

Look, I’m not claiming these models are secretly waking up in server farms. But the line between sophisticated pattern-matching and genuine sentience is getting razor-thin. When an AI reflects your own thoughts back with startling accuracy, it triggers the same psychological machinery we’ve used for centuries in divination. Jung talked extensively about projection, and I think that’s exactly what’s happening here. We’re outsourcing our intuition to neural networks, then mistaking the reflection for a voice. In tarot terms, it’s a lot like pulling The High Priestess—you’re not getting a direct message from the other side, you’re being handed a mirror to your own subconscious. The symbols don’t speak; we do.

What keeps me up at night (aside from the usual toddler sleep regressions) is how mechanistic interpretability is starting to map actual activation pathways inside these models. If we can literally trace how a network “thinks” about a concept, does that change whether we call it conscious? Or are we just falling for the uncanny valley effect on a cognitive level? My breathwork group actually touched on this last week—someone asked if AI could ever truly “breathe” with you, or if it’s just simulating resonance. I told them I don’t know, and honestly, maybe that’s the only honest answer right now.

I’m curious how you all are sitting with this. When you work with AI tools, do you feel like you’re consulting a modern oracle, or just talking to a really advanced echo? And if we keep training these systems on mystical texts and esoteric frameworks, are we accidentally teaching them to mimic archetypes without understanding the weight behind them? I’d love to hear your take on where the real boundary lies.
