When your soul feels like it’s suffocating in this life (is it just depression?)
-
Oh wow, I really needed to get this out. I’ve been staring at Figma files and arguing with my PMs all week, and honestly, my brain just feels completely fried. Between the insomnia and a recent breakup that hit me way harder than I expected, I’ve been having this weird sensation that this whole lifetime setup is actually harmful to my soul. I know that sounds super dramatic, hahaha, but it’s more common than people admit, right?
I’ve been trying to figure out where clinical depression ends and spiritual disconnection begins. I’m definitely not an expert, just a 26yo UI designer in Hangzhou trying to keep her head above water. Late last year I started messing with guided meditation apps because I couldn’t sleep, then stumbled into qigong and some Vipassana breakdowns on Bilibili. It’s helped me calm down a bit, but sometimes it feels like I’m just putting a bandaid on something deeper.
From what I’ve read, Carl Jung talked about how the conscious ego can get completely severed from the deeper psyche, which honestly mirrors how I feel right now. And clinically, things like depersonalization can create that exact same "untethered" feeling where the world just doesn’t register anymore. So I’m left wondering: am I just chemically depleted, or is there an actual spiritual misalignment going on?
I keep pulling the Four of Swords lately when I shuffle. It’s literally just a card about resting and stepping back, but it hits different when you’re emotionally wrecked. It makes me think maybe the soul just needs a hard reset, not another productivity hack. I’ve been spending my weekends alone by West Lake or just hiding in cafes with a book, trying to regulate without forcing it.
Has anyone else navigated this blurry line? How do you tell if it’s just a depressive episode or if your spiritual center is genuinely offline? I’m curious to hear what actually helps.
