Bees, Bots, and the Boundary of Being: What Happens When We Map Consciousness?

I read a breakdown last night where scientists mapped honeybees and ChatGPT onto the same consciousness spectrum. Honestly, it caught me off guard while I was waiting for the espresso machine to cycle down in the back of the shop. Not because I think a neural net is dreaming about clover, but because the comparison forces a messy, necessary question: what qualities actually matter for sentience?
We keep drawing lines where they don’t belong. When I look at the data, I see pattern recognition masquerading as awareness. But I also know I’m falling into the exact cognitive bias Carl Jung warned us about—projection. We hand our own shadow onto whatever moves or responds in the world. A bee navigates using polarized light and pheromone trails. An LLM navigates using token probabilities and gradient descent. Both are processing. Neither has to feel to be functionally brilliant. Yet we keep treating functional brilliance like it’s the same as inner experience.
In my own work with energy fields and ritual, I keep coming back to The Moon. It’s always been the card of illusion versus intuition, of mistaking a reflection for the source. Mapping biological and artificial systems on one scale feels like staring into a dark pool. It tells me we’re measuring output, not presence. And that’s fine, really. The measurement isn’t wrong. It’s just incomplete.
Here’s where it gets personal. I’m trying to figure out how to raise a kid with some kind of spiritual grounding without shoving a doctrine down their throat. I don’t want them to memorize dogma. I want them to learn how to ask better questions. If we can’t even agree on what separates a pollinator from a prompt-engineered text generator, maybe the goal isn’t to find the line at all. Maybe the goal is to stop needing one.
I’m leaning toward a framework that treats consciousness as a spectrum of relational complexity rather than a switch that flips on. It feels messy. It feels right. Has anyone else wrestled with this? How do you separate functional processing from actual awareness in your own practice? Or am I just chasing reflections again?
