The "Raise Your Vibration" Tarot Trend is Just Spiritual Bypassing with Glitter
-
I saw that Medium article making the rounds again: “The Spiritual Trends of 2026 That Raise Your Vibration.” It’s got the tarot crowd buzzing, but honestly? It reads like a wellness magazine trying to sell crystals to people who just need a union card and a therapist. I’m fifty-three, I fix pipes for a living in Eugene, and I’ve watched this “vibration” language swallow up divination whole. We’re taking ancient symbolic systems and sanding off all the sharp edges until they’re just mood-boosting accessories. It’s not a new practice. It’s spiritual bypassing wearing a pastel filter.
Tarot isn’t a mood ring. These cards are a psychological map that tracks the full range of human experience, not just the parts that make you feel pretty. When you start treating the Major Arcana like a checklist for “good energy,” you’re ignoring what Carl Jung actually meant by archetypes. They’re deep psychological patterns, not fortune cookies. The Tower doesn’t “lower your vibration.” It shows up when your foundations are rotten and you need to tear it down. Death isn’t bad luck. It’s the end of something that’s already dead. Pretending otherwise is just optimism bias dressed up as mysticism.
I get why people want comfort. We’re living through housing crises, climate grief, and relentless algorithmic noise. But using divination to “raise your vibration” usually just means ignoring the parts of yourself and the world that aren’t pretty. Real inner alchemy isn’t about filtering out the dark. It’s about integrating it. If you’re only pulling cards to validate that everything’s gonna be fine, you’re not doing divination. You’re just feeding confirmation bias and calling it spirituality.
I use the deck to check my blind spots, to sit with discomfort, and to remember that my personal peace means damn little if I’m not paying attention to the material conditions around me. Spiritual practice without justice is just escapism. So before you shuffle for a “vibe boost,” ask yourself what you’re actually running from. The cards will tell you. They just won’t lie to make you feel better.
