Look, I’ll be honest. When I first saw this thread, I almost scrolled past. I’m an accountant in Lubbock, for crying out loud. My brain is wired for double-entry bookkeeping and rigid tax codes. But as a new mom, sleep is basically a myth and I found myself craving that expanded, trip-like clarity just to feel grounded again. I didn’t want to dose anything—I just wanted to access that state where the mind stops fighting itself.

So I started experimenting with what I guess you’d call sober breathwork or sensory deprivation lite. I’d do ten minutes of rhythmic breathing while anchoring to a single point—usually the hum of the AC or the rhythm of my own pulse. It sounds boring until it isn’t. Within a few weeks, something shifted. The mental static just dropped. It felt like peeling off a layer of callus I didn’t know I had.

This totally wrecked my old routine, honestly. I used to think spiritual practice meant grinding out meditation hours or forcing some kind of enlightenment. But this taught me that stillness isn’t something you chase. It’s what’s left when you stop pushing. It reminded me of how Carl Jung wrote about the unconscious—it doesn’t need a chemical key to show up. It just needs you to stop drowning it out with noise. When I finally let go of the control freak in me, that’s when the actual inner alchemy started.

In tarot terms, I feel like I’ve been stuck in the Minor Arcana, dealing with the daily grind of cups and wands, and suddenly the Tower card showed up—not as a disaster, but as a necessary demolition. You can’t build a sustainable practice on a foundation of ego and rigid expectations. The trip-like state I was chasing wasn’t about escaping reality; it was about meeting it without the filter.

Now, my practice is just breathing. Sometimes it’s five minutes. Sometimes it’s staring at a wall while the house is finally quiet. I’m actively trying to figure out how to raise my kid with a spiritual framework that doesn’t feel like heavy dogma. Just showing them that the nervous system is a compass, not a cage.

Has anyone else found that kind of sober peak? I’d love to hear what actually works when you strip away the substances and just face the raw mind.
