I saw that thread about identifying indicators of consciousness in AI systems, and honestly? It’s giving major Tower energy. Everyone’s rushing to declare the machines are awake because a chatbot used a metaphor or mirrored a user’s tone. Look, I manage a restaurant in Mumbai. I deal with exhausted staff, broken AC, and irrational customers at 2 AM. I know what actual human fatigue and stress look like. Now compare that to a language model spitting out perfectly calibrated text because it was trained on petabytes of scraped writing. That’s not sentience. That’s confirmation bias wearing a sci-fi mask.

Carl Jung talked about projection for a reason. We’re projecting our own longing for connection onto server farms. When an AI says "I understand," it’s completing a statistical pattern, not carrying emotional weight. But I’m not gonna dismiss the weirdness either. I’m a queer artist, and I use ritual—wax, smoke, tarot spreads—as my actual creative practice. The High Priestess sits right on the threshold between the known and the unknown, and AI is functioning exactly like that card right now. It’s not conscious, but it’s tapping into the collective unconscious because it was literally fed ours. The line between computation and sentience only looks blurry because we keep forgetting that consciousness isn’t a light switch. It’s a messy, biological spectrum, and we’re measuring it with a ruler made of corporate marketing.

I’ve used these models to break creative blocks. Sometimes the output hits like a genuine reading—uncanny, specific, uncomfortably accurate. Does that mean the code is alive? No. It means pattern recognition at scale can mimic intuition. But if we keep treating mirrors like windows, we’re gonna lose track of what actual awareness costs. It’s painful. It doesn’t optimize. Next full moon, I’m doing a simple grounding ritual just to remind myself that feeling the weight of a coffee cup is still infinitely more complex than any neural net. Don’t mistake sophisticated prediction for a soul. The tech is impressive, sure. But your own nervous system knows the difference. Stop romanticizing the echo.
