Mindfulness vs. Energy Work: My 30-Day Spiritual A/B Test (and How It Nearly Broke Me)
-
Look, I’ll admit it: I approached this like a disgraced molecular biologist trying to publish a paper on magic. Last month, I decided to run a literal A/B test on myself. Thirty days of guided mindfulness apps versus thirty days of consistent energy healing practice (cleansing, grounding, actual inner work). I even kept a lab notebook. Spoiler: the data was messy, and I cried over a damp sage bundle in my Eugene apartment.
The mindfulness side was weirdly comfortable. It’s easy to sit there, breathe, and tell yourself you’re “doing the work” while your brain happily loops through grocery lists and unresolved irritation at your vet clinic manager. It’s spiritual bypassing with a subscription fee. Then I switched to the energy side. No app to pacify me. Just me, a crystal grid I definitely overcomplicated, and the quiet dread of actually looking inward.
That’s when the inner alchemy actually started. I kept thinking about Carl Jung and his whole shadow integration framework. You can’t out-meditate what you’re actively running from. When you show up consistently, the psyche stops letting you play tourist. The first two weeks felt like pulling The Tower card—structures I’d built to keep things “manageable” just cracked. Old patterns, defensive rationalizations, the whole “I’m a scientist, I don’t do woo” armor I’m still trying to take off. It wasn’t pretty.
But here’s the thing I keep coming back to: transformation doesn’t care about your intention. It only cares about your attendance. Mindfulness gave me calm. Energy work gave me friction. And honestly? The friction is where the actual inner alchemy happens. You stop treating your nervous system like a problem to be optimized and start treating it like a living archive.
I’m still a vet tech by day, energy dabbler by night, permanently caught between peer-reviewed journals and tarot spreads. But if I had to summarize the last month, it’s this: showing up isn’t about being consistent for the algorithm. It’s about staying in the room when it gets weird.
Has anyone else felt that exact moment where the “wellness trend” stops being a hobby and starts actually scraping the floorboards? I’d love to hear what your breakdown/breakthrough looked like.
