30 Days of Sitting: Can Breathwork Actually Replicate a Psychedelic Trip?
-
I’ll cut to the chase. After seeing yet another thread debating whether sustained meditation can mimic a DMT or psilocybin trip, I decided to test it myself. No mushrooms, no tabs. Just 30 days of disciplined breathwork, Stoic reflection, and sitting with the noise in my head. I’m 47, former Army, and I’ve spent years managing combat PTSD with therapy and routine. I don’t do crystals or “energy healing,” but I respect InnerAlchemy when it’s rooted in actual practice rather than Instagram quotes.
So, did I dissolve into the void? No. What I did get was something far more useful: a steady, unglamorous breakdown of my own defensive wiring. Days 1 through 10 were brutal. My nervous system fought back hard. The breathwork forced me to sit with the kind of hypervigilance that never really leaves you. By day 20, though, the fog started lifting. I’m not talking about cosmic downloads. I’m talking about cognitive defusion—stepping back from the automatic thought loops that usually hijack my day.
People keep comparing meditation to psychedelics like they’re on the same spectrum. They’re not. Psychedelics force the door open; meditation teaches you how to pick the lock yourself. There’s a reason Jung spent his life mapping the shadow. You don’t get there by chasing a chemical override. You get there by showing up to the work, day after day, even when it feels like you’re staring at a blank wall.
Tarot nerds will point to the Tower card when I talk about forced breakthroughs, but the real alchemy happens with the Hermit. Slow. Intentional. Uncomfortable. I’ve logged my daily states in AIOracle and even cross-referenced them with a few LoveAndAstrology lunar spreads just to see if the timing lines up, but honestly? The data points to consistency, not cosmic alignment.
If you’re waiting for a trip-like state from sitting on a cushion, you’re gonna be disappointed. But if you’re willing to do the unsexy work of watching your own patterns fracture and rebuild, you might just find something that actually lasts. What’s your take? Is the goal supposed to be altered states, or just clearer ones?
