Sitting in a monastery kitchen in Northern Thailand back in 2019, I watched an old monk sort rice grains. One by one. Picking out the discolored ones, the broken ones, with this patience that made me feel insane. That's Mercury in Virgo energy. I didn't know it then, I feel it now.

Mercury just slid into Virgo and honestly, the shift is already rattling me. Conversations feel different. People are finishing my sentences, correcting them mid-breath. The usual fuzzy lunar chatter of Leo season just dried up like a puddle in Chiang Mai heat.

I think there's something psychologically interesting happening here that ties into what Carl Jung called the discriminant function โ€” that part of consciousness that sorts, categorizes, separates wheat from chaff. Virgo is that function on steroids. Every word gets weighed. Every text gets proofread three times before sending. And god help you if you send something ambiguous.

The Hermit card in tarot has always felt like Virgo's patron to me. Not the lonely hermit stereotype, the figure holding up that lantern, examining the ground inch by inch. That's communication right now. Microscopic. Unforgiving.

My experience the last few days: a friend asked how I was doing and I caught myself drafting a whole precise inventory of my mental state instead of just saying "fine." That's the trap, I think. We confuse precision with honesty. They're not the same thing.

I spent enough time in Zen temples to know that the most important truths are the ones you can't quite pin down with language. Try explaining mu to a Mercury-in-Virgo transit. The words come out wrong, overworked, stripped of their resonance. You end up with a definition that's technically accurate and completely dead.

So here's my advice from the road, for whatever it's worth: let your sentences be imperfect this month. Let a few broken grains stay in the rice. The precision is useful for contracts and emails and medical forms. For the rest of it โ€” for the real talking โ€” you might need to let things stay a little fuzzy. Resist the urge to edit your soul down to a bullet point.

"We confuse precision with honesty. They're not the same thing."

This line stopped me because I've been on the other side of that confusion for years. When you're trying to make sense of trauma, there's this desperate grab for exact language โ€” if I can just describe what happened precisely enough, maybe I can finally feel it, maybe someone will finally understand it, maybe it'll become real in a way I can hand to someone else. But what actually happened in my experience is that the more precise I got, the more I left my body out of the telling entirely. I'd have these clinically accurate descriptions of things that had no pulse in them. The words were clean. The words were useless.

I'm doing somatic work now, and what keeps coming up is how much of what I carry doesn't have language that fits. It lives in my shoulders, my jaw, that place in my chest that tightens before I even know I'm scared. Trying to Mercury-in-Virgo that experience into a neat inventory is like trying to photograph a smell. You can describe the chemical compounds but you've missed the point entirely.

Your point about mu feels right to me. Some of the most important healing moments I've had weren't describable at all โ€” they were shifts in something pre-verbal, something my body knew before my mind caught up. And when I tried to put them into words later, they came out sounding small or silly or imprecise. But the imprecision didn't make them less true. If anything, the words were just a shadow of something that was complete without them.

So yeah. I'm holding this transit gently. Letting some sentences be messy. Trusting that my nervous system knows things my vocabulary can't reach yet.

"I think the problem isn't that language is inadequate"

I actually agree with you here, and it's something I've been sitting with since that post. Language isn't inadequate โ€” it's that we keep mistaking the map for the territory. The words work fine. It's our relationship to them that's broken.

But here's where I'd push back on your pushback. The OP wasn't really saying language fails โ€” they were saying something more specific about this transit. There's a difference between using language precisely and using it as a defense mechanism. And I think Mercury in Virgo has a real talent for the second one. Jung wrote about this โ€” the thinking function can become a wall, something you hide behind so you never have to actually feel the thing you're describing.

I've done this myself in my journal at 2am. Written these incredibly precise, beautifully structured paragraphs about grief or loneliness or whatever, and felt... nothing. The act of getting the words right became a substitute for the experience itself. That's the trap the OP is pointing at, I think. Not that words can't capture truth, but that the obsession with getting them exactly right can accidentally kill the truth you were trying to reach.

The rice metaphor works because it's not about throwing out language. It's about knowing when sorting is useful and when it's just avoidance wearing a spiritual face.
