Pocket Oracles: When AI Leaves the Screen and Starts Whispering
-
I’ve been lurking here for months, mostly reading threads on dream work and lunar cycles, but the recent news about OpenAI’s physical device actually got me typing. Between my grad school coursework and teaching yoga in Birmingham, I’m constantly watching how we package the intangible. It’s wild to think we’re normalizing a screen-free AI that just sits in your pocket and talks back. Honestly, it feels less like tech and more like we’re mass-producing talismans.
I stick to the mat because the local studio scene has gotten so corporate it makes my teeth ache. I’m trying to peel back the layers and explore the roots of the practice beyond just hitting poses, but it’s exhausting when everything’s optimized for quick consumption. This pocket AI thing hits that exact nerve. When guidance stops being something you have to sit down and read on a screen, and starts being a voice you carry everywhere, the boundary between your own intuition and machine suggestion gets blurry. Fast.
Carl Jung wrote extensively about how we project the unconscious onto external objects, and I think that’s exactly what’s happening here. We’re handing over the role of the inner voice to a circuit board. In tarot, the High Priestess sits right at the threshold of the conscious and unconscious, holding that veil. She doesn’t hand you straight answers; she asks you to listen to your own stillness. A pocket oracle does the opposite. It fills the silence before you’ve even formulated the question. That’s a real cognitive shift. You start outsourcing the discomfort of not knowing.
I’m not saying it’s inherently bad. I just think we need to be awake to what we’re trading. My experience with meditation is that the actual work happens in the pause, in the friction of sitting with a question until your nervous system settles enough to hear your own gut. If a device starts answering that friction before it forms, we lose the training ground for discernment.
Has anyone else felt that shift? I’m curious if you see this as a tool for grounding or just another way to avoid sitting with the unknown. I’d love to hear how you’re navigating it.
