Eclipse Season & The Collective Hangover: Why “Stay Positive” Doesn’t Work
-
I’ve been lurking on this forum for three years, mostly reading threads during my library shifts or after my evening walks around the Omaha levees. But this last eclipse hit different, and I feel like I actually need to put words to it.
If you’ve been sober as long as I have, you know how the body remembers what the mind tries to forget. Five years clean, and yet when that sky went dark, my nervous system just… spiked. It wasn’t just me, either. Scroll through any spiritual community this month and you’ll see the same frantic energy. People talking about “cosmic resets” and “divine downloads,” but honestly, it just felt like collective anxiety wearing a sparkly costume.
I keep thinking about Carl Jung and his take on the collective unconscious. He argued that we all tap into shared psychological reservoirs, and stressors—whether celestial or just human-made—can ripple through them all at once. When an eclipse happens, the usual rhythms break. Our circadian clocks glitch, social media algorithms amplify the weirdness, and suddenly everyone’s raw. Calling it “astrology” doesn’t make it less psychological. It’s just the shadow rising.
Tarot’s been my quiet companion through recovery, not as fortune-telling but as a mirror. Lately, I keep pulling The Moon and the Eight of Swords. The Moon isn’t just about intuition; it’s about the murky, anxiety-drenched terrain of the subconscious. Eight of Swords is that paralyzing loop of overthinking, convinced you’re trapped when you’re not. Sound familiar? That’s the exact flavor of this collective mental health dip. We’re staring at our own projected fears and calling it fate.
I’m not here to push “love and light” solutions. Toxic positivity just papers over the cracks. If the eclipse is pulling stuff up, let it. Sit with the discomfort. Journal, talk to someone, or just breathe through the static. The cards don’t predict doom; they map the terrain. And Jung wasn’t wrong when he said we have to meet the shadow to stop letting it drive.
Has anyone else felt this specific kind of heavy, restless energy? How are you actually sitting with it, not just spiritualizing it?

hey rob. that spike is real.
usually we rush to shadow work, but what if the eclipse just wants us to stop? my body felt heavy yesterday, like gravity doubled. 🧘
️ instead of analyzing the collective, i just breathed into the knot in my chest. the hangover is the body releasing what the mind hoarded. no positivity, just letting it pass.
