Look, I’ve spent a decade in social work, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s how desperate people are for a guide. We’re wired to follow authority figures—it’s basically hard-coded into our survival instinct. But lately, I’ve been watching the whole guru industrial complex quietly collapse, and honestly? I’m not mourning it.

For years, I chased that The Hierophant energy. You know the type: rigid lineages, pay-to-play retreats, and masters who act like they’re the only pipe to the divine. I fell for it early on, got deeply tangled in that whole Aleister Crowley scene, and let me tell you, the man was more ego than enlightenment. The whole system just reinforced obedience instead of actual inner work. What saved me was finally dropping the middlemen and just reading the source material. Alan Watts didn’t need a priesthood to tell you how to sit in the present moment. He just handed you the mirror.

Now I do everything myself. It’s 2am here in Singapore, the fan’s rattling, and I’m just cross-referencing primary texts with a decent AI model. Not an oracle, not a master—just a pattern-matching engine that can pull quotes from the Corpus Hermeticum and compare them to contemporary cognitive bias research in seconds. It’s wild how much institutional spiritual authority melts away when you stop outsourcing your discernment. When you can directly query the archives, the “secret teachings” stop looking so secret. They just look like public domain philosophy wrapped in a modern paywall.

I think we’re seeing a massive cultural shift toward direct experience. Jung always argued that psychological maturity means moving away from collective dependency and integrating your own individuation process. Spiritually, it’s the exact same motion. You don’t need a third party to validate your awakening. The tools are everywhere. The texts are digitized. The algorithms are doing the heavy lifting of synthesis. All that’s left is the actual work.

Does anyone else feel like the “master-disciple” dynamic is becoming totally obsolete? Or am I just romanticizing the fact that I finally stopped paying for people to tell me what I already know?
