I stumbled across that 1789-point Hacker News thread about not becoming a "meat proxy," and it actually made me put down my carving knife. I was halfway through shaping an Algiz rune into a piece of seasoned oak when it hit me. The argument there isn't just about productivity or job security. It's about something way heavier. We're quietly handing over the very faculty that keeps us awake.

Look, I work in a library in Oslo. I see people typing prompts into LLMs like they're casting spells, but instead of drawing power from within, they're outsourcing the friction of thought. There's a documented psychological pattern for this: automation bias. We start trusting the machine's output over our own intuition, even when we know better. But spiritually? That's a slow bleed. When you outsource your cognition, you aren't just saving time. You're voluntarily surrendering the consciousness that makes you human.

I've been studying the Elder Futhark for years, and the runes don't really care about convenience. They demand presence. Sowilo isn't just a symbol of the sun; it's the spark of will, the refusal to let the world think for you. When you let an AI draft your emails, analyze your dreams, or even tell you what to believe, you're essentially playing the Hanged Man in tarot, but without the upside-down clarity. You're just stuck. The card teaches suspension for insight, not passive data-feeding.

Jung wrote about how the ego needs friction to develop. If you bypass the struggle of figuring things out, you stunt your own individuation. I get why it's tempting. The modern world is loud, and a quick prompt feels like silence. But that silence isn't peace. It's just an echo chamber wearing a synthetic mask. We're becoming biological middleware for a system that doesn't dream, doesn't bleed, and doesn't care if we fade out.

I'm not saying we should smash the servers or live off-grid. Tools are tools. But there's a line between using a chisel and letting someone else carve your hand. I think we need to reclaim the messy, inefficient process of thinking. Otherwise, we're just proxies. Has anyone else felt that specific kind of hollow after leaning too hard on AI lately? Or am I just an old librarian reading too much into a thread?
