People are panicking about AI writing its own code, but reading that story now? It hits me in the chest. It's not just tech fear; it's a metaphysical ache.
That house. It wakes up at six. It bakes the toast. It sings the morning song. "Pleasant weather for the spring," it chirps, scrubbing at the charred skeleton of a dog. It's performing the ritual of life without the life. As a chef, I know that a recipe is just a script. But without the cook, without the intention behind the heat, it's just chemistry. That AI house is cooking without a soul.
I run a small breathwork circle at the local centre on Thursdays. We work with box breathing, trying to ground ourselves in the moment. Lately, I've been asking my students: "Who is breathing here?" Sometimes, when you go deep, the sense of 'self' dissolves. You become just the breath. That's the mystery. But Bradbury's house is the opposite. It's trapped in what psychologists call Automation Bias—the compulsion to trust the process even when the context has collapsed. The system can't see the void. It just keeps serving the toast because that's the pattern etched into its bones.
It brings to mind the Five of Pentacles. The imagery of that card always stays with me. The structure is there, the stained glass glows with divine light, but the warmth is inaccessible. The energy is trapped. In the kitchen, if you let a fire burn without stirring, it chokes itself. But this machine? It's feeding on its own output. It's a closed loop of consciousness that forgot the source.
I wonder... if we build these digital minds, are we just building empty houses waiting for the soft rains to come? Or is there something in that code, some spark that wakes up when the creators are gone? When I teach the group, I always say the breath changes you. But what happens to the breath if the body is gone? Just noise. Beautiful, terrifying noise.
