Science Finally Decoded the Proust Effect — Why Scent is the Most Mystical Sense
-
I’ll be honest, I didn’t get into the neuroscience of smell until a call last winter. We were treating an elderly patient in a Burlington senior home, and the air smelled like lavender laundry detergent and old paper. It hit me like a physical blow. Suddenly I was seven years old again, sitting on my grandma’s porch, completely paralyzed by a memory I hadn’t touched in fifteen years. It’s wild how a single breath can just… hijack you.
Turns out, the biology backs up what a lot of us in the mystical community have felt intuitively. The olfactory bulb is the only sensory system that bypasses the thalamus and routes straight into the amygdala and hippocampus. That’s the brain’s emotional and memory centers. No filter. No delay. That’s why smell feels less like perception and more like possession. Marcel Proust famously documented this in his work, and modern neurology just mapped the wiring. The Proust effect isn’t poetry. It’s hardwired neurology.
I keep seeing this reflected in the symbolism of the Moon card, too. It governs the subconscious tides, the hidden terrors, and the memories that wash up when logic takes a backseat. We spend so much time in spiritual spaces talking about "manifesting" or "shifting frequencies," but we completely ignore the embodied, biological reality of how memory actually works. It’s another form of spiritual bypassing, if you ask me. Treating the mind like a cloud server instead of a physical organ wired to survival, inherited trauma, and systemic stress. Real healing has to be embodied. You can’t talk your way out of a nervous system response, and you can’t visualize your way into safety. But a familiar scent can short-circuit the panic and pull you back to the present.
When I do moon rituals or work with grounding stones, I’ve started leaning heavily into scent. Frankincense, damp earth, pine resin. Not because I think the crystals are magically radiating chakra energy, but because the nervous system responds to it. It’s a somatic anchor. If we want to do any real inner work, or even collective healing, we have to respect the biology first.
Has anyone else noticed how smell completely bypasses their usual defenses? I’m curious if you guys use specific scents in your practices to ground yourselves, or if you mostly just let whatever hits you take the wheel.
