I spend my shifts at JFK scanning x-rays and watching people try to smuggle contraband across the border. I’ve been reading up on the cortisol-neuroplasticity connection lately, and it’s actually wild. Chronic childhood stress floods the system with cortisol, which basically downregulates growth factors and locks down neural flexibility. The brain adapts to survive by hardwiring hypervigilance. It’s not a personality flaw. It’s biology. When I see that in the literature, it finally explains why traditional talk therapy sometimes just bounces off me. You can’t think your way out of a stress response that’s been structurally reinforced for over a decade.
Jung called it the shadow, but I think he was underestimating the plumbing. Carl Jung understood that repressed material doesn’t disappear, it just waits in the basement. When your nervous system is locked in a defensive posture, that’s exactly where it sits. Somatic work and inner child reparenting aren’t just woo-woo metaphors.
