I’ve been drowning in Johns Hopkins literature lately. Sleepless nights with a newborn have me grabbing at every consciousness thread I can find. Matthew Johnson’s research on psilocybin and neuroplasticity is actually pretty straightforward. The drug doesn’t heal you. It just knocks down your default mode network’s firewall.

What happens next is entirely up to you. That’s where the meditation comes in. You get this temporary window of massive synaptic pruning, but if you’re just pacing the room or spiraling, you’re wasting the setup. Stillness is the actual mechanism.

Honestly, it’s exactly what every contemplative tradition has been saying for thousands of years. We just needed fMRI machines to stop doubting it. From a psychological angle, it mirrors Carl Jung’s concept of active imagination. You stop fighting the subconscious noise. You just let the shadow unpack its luggage while your brain physically rewires.

I keep picturing The Hanged Man. Suspended, upside down, completely surrendering control. That’s the stillness right there. You don’t force the breakthrough. You let the chemistry dissolve the rigid ego structures, and you just watch.

I’m trying to figure out how to frame this for my kid without turning it into dogma. I don’t want him thinking there’s a magic pill or a rigid rulebook. I want him to know the tools just create the conditions. The work is always internal.

Anyway, just my two cents from a very tired customs officer in Madison. Does anyone else pair sessions with silent sitting, or do you lean on guided visualization?
