Lucid Dreaming: Is Your Unconscious Scheduling Meditation Sessions You're Too Busy to Notice?
-
Between the subway rumble in my Brooklyn apartment and a long day of voice acting sessions, my brain rarely shuts off. Waking life feels performative—hitting marks, keeping the energy up, reading scripts that aren't mine. Sleep shouldn't be.
I came across a recent review discussing whether lucid dreaming actually improves mental health, and the consensus is cautiously positive. It suggests that lucid dreaming might blur the line between sleeping and waking practice, acting like a meditation session your unconscious scheduled without asking you. That hit home. I don't really treat tarot as prophecy anymore; after a rough breakup a while back, I started using cards like The Moon just as journaling prompts to unpack what's going on. Lucid dreaming feels like the same energy, but the deck is dealt by your own brain.
From a Jungian perspective, this makes a lot of sense. Carl Jung talked about the shadow and how we need to integrate those repressed parts. If lucid dreaming is just meditation in disguise, it's basically shadow work on autopilot. You're observing the dream state, which is a form of mindfulness, but you're also engaging with symbols that your conscious mind ignores.
But I have to push back a little on the "mental health boost" narrative. It's not always a spa day. Sometimes you get lucid and realize you're in a nightmare you can't control, or the realization makes the dream fragment immediately. It's not a magic fix. I think people get too excited about the "power" aspect and miss the discipline part. Just like sitting down with a tarot spread doesn't fix your life instantly, lucid dreaming requires practice and patience.
If we view these dreams as meditation, we have to treat them with the same respect. You can't just waltz in, demand answers, and expect enlightenment. You have to show up.
For those here who practice WILD or MILD techniques, do you feel like your dreams are offering guidance, or are you just projecting your own ego into the dream space? I'm trying to figure out where the signal ends and the noise begins.
