I’ve been teaching vinyasa in Nashville for nearly two decades now, and honestly, I’m tired of the pastel mats and influencer poses. We’ve stripped the practice down to calorie burns and core engagement, completely missing the engine that actually drives it. Lately, I’ve been drifting into the older texts, trying to remember what the siddhas were actually talking about before it got packaged into twenty-minute playlists.
I ran across this proposal recently about a single-axiom model of reality. It’s still rough around the edges, but the whole premise is that you can derive all of physics from one foundational statement about awareness. It sounds radical, but it actually feels familiar. The Upanishads were pointing to this millennia ago. Tat tvam asi. Thou art that. You don’t even need to leave the Western tradition, either. The Hermetic axiom that “All is Mind, the Universe is Mental” has been sitting on shelves waiting for modern science to stop treating consciousness like a biological afterthought.
I think what’s happening here is a shift in how we frame perception. We’re conditioned into a materialist default, which is just a cognitive bias baked into how we’re taught to see the world. When you actually sit with it, the arrow of explanation flips. Matter doesn’t produce awareness; awareness is the canvas matter gets painted on. I see it in my studio every day. You can align a hip hinge perfectly, but if the practitioner is mentally scattered, chasing the next pose, or trapped in the noise of their own narrative, the physical structure collapses. The form follows the focus. The body is just the interface; the real work happens in the field of attention.
That’s exactly what the idealists were getting at, and why modern physics is slowly circling back to it. Quantum mechanics didn’t just give us wave functions and particle duality; it handed us the observer problem. You can’t measure the system without altering it. The act of observation isn’t a passive recording—it’s participatory. Information theory is starting to treat reality as fundamentally relational, not substantial. When you push the math far enough, the hard edges of "stuff" dissolve into patterns of relationship, and patterns require a perceiver to actualize them. It’s not magic. It’s just ontology doing what it always does: revealing that the container is more fundamental than the contents.
We spent a few centuries trying to reduce everything to gears and levers, assuming consciousness was just a late-stage accident of complex chemistry. But accidents don’t write the laws. They don’t hold the space for the experiment. The ancient texts weren’t being poetic; they were being precise. They recognized that before there is a world to map, there is a mind to map it. Modern physics is finally building the tools to measure what the mystics already knew by direct experience. The universe isn’t a machine we stumbled into. It’s a reflection we’re learning to read.
