I’ll be honest: I used to treat retrograde charts like a weather forecast for bad luck. I’m 34, she/her, and I run a plumbing business out here in Spokane. I actually cut my teeth in engineering before switching to the trades, and after my wife passed, I fell hard into astrology trying to map some order onto the chaos. But when you spend your day calculating pipe pressure drops and troubleshooting faulty gauges, you start noticing patterns that have nothing to do with planetary alignments. Lately, I’ve been looking at Mercury retrograde through a completely different lens, and it’s clicking for me.

What we casually call “retrograde energy” is basically cognitive load theory in action. Back in the 50s, George A. Miller published his work on working memory, showing we can only juggle about seven chunks of information at once. Later research by Nelson Cowan trimmed that down to four. When you’re already running on low sleep, fighting off the Pacific Northwest gray, and suddenly your phone drops a text, your laptop freezes, and a client changes the project scope… your working memory just snaps. You miss details. You send the wrong email. You feel like the cosmos is actively tripping you up. But it’s not mysticism. It’s just your brain hitting its processing limit.

Tarot actually mirrors this perfectly if you look past the incense and velvet. The Two of Swords shows a blindfolded figure holding two crossed blades. It’s the classic “analysis paralysis” spread. I’ve pulled it constantly during retrograde windows, and it’s not a cosmic warning. It’s a literal diagram of cognitive overload. When your prefrontal cortex is maxed out, you lose the ability to weigh options clearly. You freeze. That’s why I’ve started treating retrograde seasons like system maintenance. I batch my communications, write everything down before it hits my head, and refuse to make structural decisions when I’m mentally fatigued.

I’m not throwing out astrology. I still calculate the charts, and I respect the archetypal weight of it. But the mechanism behind the “glitches” feels entirely neurological to me. If you’re drowning in mental static right now, don’t buy another smudge stick. Lower your cognitive load. Close the tabs. Let your working memory breathe. The planets are doing their usual elliptical dance, but your nervous system just needs a hard reset.

Has anyone else noticed their retrograde struggles line up directly with periods of high stress or sleep deprivation? I’d love to compare notes.

The RAM analogy feels a bit too rigid for the fluid nature of planetary transits, doesn't it? I'd argue we're looking more at a shift in autonomic nervous system regulation than just cognitive overload. When Mercury goes retrograde, I see it as a biological signal to engage the parasympathetic response rather than a hardware bottleneck. Have you noticed if this 'overload' correlates with actual changes in your sleep cycles or heart rate variability during these periods?
