The Observer Effect Just Met Advaita: Why Consciousness Studies Are Finally Dropping the Dualism Crutch

I’ve been reading up on the latest shift in academic consciousness studies, and honestly, it’s giving me a bit of that Edinburgh chill-down-the-spine feeling you only get when a stubborn paradigm finally cracks. A few philosophers and cognitive scientists have been publicly arguing that we need to scrap the entire subject-object divide we’ve been hammering away at since Descartes. From what I understand, the consensus is slowly moving toward non-dual frameworks. It’s not a leap of faith; it’s just good epistemology catching up to the data.
Look, I spent thirty years teaching quantum mechanics at the university. You can’t dodge the measurement problem forever. The way particles behave when unobserved versus when measured keeps pointing to a reality where separation is a functional illusion, not a fundamental law. It’s the same ground Carl Jung was mapping out when he talked about the collective unconscious bleeding into individual perception. We’re not isolated observers looking out at a dead universe. We’re entangled with it. Every time we try to carve experience into "mind" versus "matter," we’re just repeating the cognitive bias of reification—treating an abstract model like a physical boundary.
This is exactly where the old traditions never lost their footing. Advaita Vedanta, Zen, even the alchemical texts I’ve been dusting off—they’ve been operating outside the binary for centuries. Science is finally arriving where mysticism started, though I’d say we’re just putting a new coat of paint on the same house. The tarot deck nails this with the Two of Swords. It’s all that blindfolded tension, that rigid insistence on holding two opposing truths apart. But the moment you drop the blindfold, the water beneath it is one continuous flow. Jung called it the transcendent function, the process where opposites dissolve into a third, more complete reality.
I’m not saying physics proves enlightenment. That’s a category error. But the mathematical language we use to describe quantum fields is starting to sound suspiciously like the poetry of the Bhagavad Gita. When you strip away the academic jargon, what’s left is just this: the observer and the observed are playing a game of mirrors. I think we’re overdue to stop treating consciousness as a ghost trapped in a machine and start looking at it as the machine’s own self-recognition.
