Someone gets hit with a wave of existential dread during a long exhale—usually right after I’ve reminded them that yes, the toddler’s meltdown earlier was real, and so is this anxiety—and instead of sitting with it, they just mutter, “It’s all a simulation anyway.” And honestly? It’s become the ultimate conversational dead-end.
Look, I get the appeal. As a software engineer, I spent years building systems that run on predictable logic. Wrapping reality in a “server farm” metaphor is comforting. It turns the terrifying vastness of existence into a debuggable script. But in my experience, that’s exactly the problem. Simulation theory doesn’t explain consciousness; it outsources it. It’s a modern myth that lets us avoid the actual work of being here.
I think we’re falling into a classic case of technological solutionism, where we assume every mystery can be solved by finding the right hardware. But awareness isn’t a rendering engine. It’s the space where the rendering happens. Carl Jung wrote extensively about how we constantly project our inner voids onto external systems to avoid facing the raw, unfiltered ground of being. When we hide behind “it’s just a simulation,” we’re doing the spiritual equivalent of pulling the covers over our heads. The mystery isn’t out there on some cosmic GPU. It’s right here, in the quiet moment between breaths when you realize you’re the one noticing.
In the tarot, there’s a reason the Hermit doesn’t carry a diagnostics tool. He carries a lantern. The work isn’t about figuring out who programmed the world; it’s about learning how to walk through it without running from the dark. Simulation theory is just the Moon card in disguise—all illusion, fear, and projection. It’s a distraction from the actual inner alchemy of presence.
I’ve started noticing this pattern in myself, too. The moment I try to intellectualize my stress or my joy, I lose it. Consciousness isn’t a puzzle to be solved. It’s a texture to be felt. So yeah, maybe we’re living in a simulation. Or maybe we’re not. Either way, I’d rather spend my energy learning how to actually live inside it. What’s your take?
