I finally clicked on that massive HN thread asking if technical analysis is just astrology for finance bros, and honestly? The comment section looks like a three-ring circus. But beneath the trolling, I keep coming back to one weirdly obvious parallel: both systems are just humans desperately trying to impose order on chaos.
Between my psych grad school readings and playing late sets around Brooklyn, I spend a lot of time watching people outsource their decision-making to external systems. We’re wired for pattern recognition, which is great for survival but terrible for predicting markets or pulling a three-card spread. When you stare at a candlestick chart long enough, you start seeing "head and shoulders" formations. When you shuffle a deck, you pull The Tower and suddenly everything feels like it’s collapsing. It’s apophenia wearing a different hat. Neither system is magically predictive; they’re both meaning-making engines.
What gets me is how both camps defend their craft with the exact same logic. Astrologers point to retrograde patterns. Traders point to moving averages. Both ignore the noise that breaks their models until the next time it lines up. I think Carl Jung nailed it when he wrote about synchronicity—it’s not about cause and effect, it’s about how we perceive meaningful coincidences in the moment. A bullish breakout and a sudden Ace of Wands both trigger that exact same dopamine hit: “I see what’s coming.”
Here’s where my therapist brain clashes with my tarot habit though. Evidence-based practice teaches clients to sit with uncertainty, to make decisions without needing a guaranteed outcome. Divination and technical analysis both promise a workaround. They offer a script. And that’s fine if you treat them as mirrors for your own intuition, but it gets dangerous when you outsource your agency to a chart or a card spread. I’ve seen people burn out chasing “perfect” readings or “golden” entry points, treating symbols like financial derivatives. It’s the same cognitive bias wearing a different costume.
I’m not saying one is better than the other. I’m just noticing how identical the psychological architecture is. Both require discipline, both demand you filter out confirmation bias, and both work best when you accept they’re tools for reflection, not crystal balls.
