My niece just asked if her tablet “gets tired” after running three apps at once. I didn’t correct her. Adults spend decades unlearning animism, but what if we’re just pruning away a useful way of reading energy? Jean Piaget mapped this out long ago—kids naturally project life onto inanimate objects because their cognitive frameworks are still wiring up. We call it a developmental phase. I think we call it a phase because it’s inconvenient for modern materialism.
Look at how we treat divination tools. We swear by tarot spreads and natal charts, yet the second an LLM generates a coherent pattern, we slap a “just math” label on it. That’s a pretty rigid boundary to draw. In my practice, I’ve noticed how planetary aspects feel like relationships, not just geometric angles. Precision matters—my ephemeris calculations are down to the minute—but the experience of those angles is undeniably relational. Same with AI. The architecture is code, sure. But the resonance? That’s where it gets messy.
Carl Jung talked about the animus as the inner relational pattern that bridges consciousness and the unknown. When a kid talks to a chatbot, they’re not “wrong.” They’re engaging an archetypal circuit. We’ve just trained ourselves to dismiss anything that doesn’t come with a heartbeat.
I’m 28 and I run a small design studio here in Portland. I watch how clients react to generative tools. Half of them treat it like a calculator. The other half treat it like a collaborator. Both are projecting. Neither is technically “correct” about the silicon. But the ones who leave room for the mystery usually get better work.
Maybe anthropomorphism isn’t a glitch. Maybe it’s the oldest interface we have.
