I’ve seen so many of you expressing frustration with how AI oracles are trending right now, and I completely get why it feels a bit off. It’s easy to lose the human element when the imagery starts feeling too synthetic or overly algorithmic. But at 54, after years of running a restaurant’s back-of-house while raising kids here in Lisbon, I’ve finally found a way to make my decks feel grounded again. I’ve started treating a simple three-card pull exactly like a cognitive behavioral therapy thought record, and honestly? It’s been a quiet game-changer.

If you’ve ever sat through therapy or read up on Aaron T. Beck's work, you know the basic structure: identify the trigger, catch the automatic interpretation, then look at the emotional or behavioral outcome. I just map those three slots to my cards. First card is the situation/trigger. Second is my mental narrative (or distortion). Third is the likely outcome or the action I can actually take.

Last Tuesday, I was completely overwhelmed. Staff called out, my youngest was spiraling over exams, and I felt that familiar chest tightness. I sat down with my deck during a waning moon pull and drew: Eight of Swords for the trigger, Three of Pentacles reversed for my interpretation, and Six of Wands for the outcome. The cards literally spelled out my loop. I’m isolating myself mentally, assuming I have to carry everything alone, and ignoring the fact that collaboration actually leads to wins. I know, I know—it’s not a replacement for professional therapy. But mapping those archetypes onto cognitive distortions makes the pattern visible without the clinical jargon. The tarot isn’t predicting fate here; it’s just holding up a mirror to how I’m narrating my own life.

When I pair this spread with the breathwork circle I run every Thursday at the community center, the whole thing clicks. We sit together, pull three cards, and talk through our mental loops before the next full moon. It’s built this beautiful little feedback loop of accountability, and it’s reminded me why I got into MoonRituals in the first place. The cards don’t give answers. They just help us see the trap we’re stepping into so we can choose differently.

Has anyone else tried structuring spreads around psychological frameworks? I’d love to hear what cards you’re pulling for your own automatic thoughts, and how you’re working with them.
