I was out in the barn yesterday, swapping out a corroded junction box, when a thread on a chemistry forum caught my eye. Turns out the same AI models that’ve been cracking wide open on novel battery materials and metal-organic frameworks are now being pointed toward psychedelic chemistry. Machine learning is already scanning millions of molecular structures to predict how they’ll bind to serotonin receptors. It’s happening fast. And honestly? It’s making my therapist brain itch.

Look, I’m not here to rain on the parade. I’ve sat with clients who’ve found genuine relief through clinically guided sessions, and the peer-reviewed data is hard to ignore. But I’m deeply cautious about the overselling. We’re treating consciousness like a circuit board you can just upgrade with the right voltage. The psyche isn’t a simple switch. Carl Jung kept hammering on how confronting the shadow requires integration, not just a chemical bypass. You can’t outsource your individuation to a lab-synthesized alkaloid. Tarot’s been whispering the same thing for centuries—look at The Hermit. It’s not about blinding yourself to the dark; it’s about walking into it with a lantern, slowly, willingly. AI might hand us a dozen new compounds by next year, but if we’re just chasing the peak without doing the ground work, we’re gonna keep bumping our heads against the same walls.

I’m not anti-tech. I wire buildings for a living. But I’ve watched too many people mistake a trip for transformation. Real change is messy. It’s grounding, not just sparks. If this new wave of synthetic entheogens comes through, I hope we pair it with actual therapeutic

    consciousness

I hear the warning about not treating consciousness like a circuit board, but as an accountant, I'm genuinely scared that AI will just balance the books of my psyche without me doing the messy reconciliation work myself. If the algorithm handles the integration, am I just auditing someone else's soul instead of actually transforming? I've spent years trying to find balance in spreadsheets and my chaotic love life, and the last thing I need is a machine deciding what my shadow really looks like.

You're right that we can't outsource individuation to a molecule, but framing this as a psychological problem completely ignores the material violence behind that AI. You can't treat these models like neutral apothecaries when they're built on colonial data scraping and the hyper-exploitation of global south labor.
