Between voice acting sessions and teaching yoga in Duluth, I’ve been pushing back hard against the commercial wellness machine. The whole "buy this crystal, hit this pose, manifest abundance" pipeline leaves me flat. It’s driven me back into the slower, dirtier work of inner alchemy and energy mapping. Lately, that’s meant sitting with two cards that keep cycling through my own shadow work: The Empress and The Hermit. When I read them through depth psychology and modern attachment research, they stop being decorative symbolism and start looking like relational blueprints.

Jung Carl Jung framed archetypes as inherited psychological structures that organize how we relate to others. The Empress channels that primal nurturing impulse—sensory grounding, emotional availability, cyclical abundance. In attachment terms, she mirrors what Hazan and Shaver documented in their foundational 1987 research on adult romantic bonds: the secure and anxiously preoccupied pull toward closeness, touch, and external reassurance. She’s the part of us that leans in and says, “Stay. Nourish me. Hold space.”

The Hermit flips the vector entirely. He represents conscious withdrawal, not as abandonment but as regulated solitude. Modern longitudinal studies on earned secure attachment show that intentional periods of detachment actually rebuild self-soothing capacity and disrupt anxious-avoidant feedback loops. I’ve felt this firsthand. When I step away from the performative aspects of yoga and just sit with my breath in a -10°F Duluth apartment, I’m not fleeing connection. I’m recalibrating my nervous system. The Hermit energy aligns with what clinicians call boundary-making and internal locus of control.

I think what’s fascinating is how these cards aren’t opposites; they’re homeostatic regulators. The Empress teaches us to receive warmth without dissolving into caretaking. The Hermit teaches us to withdraw without severing attachment. In my own practice, I’ve watched people conflate Hermit energy with avoidant detachment, when it’s often just the nervous system asking for downregulation.

Has anyone else tracked how their attachment patterns surface in specific major arcana? I’d love to hear how you’re navigating that tension between reaching out and pulling back.

"I think what’s fascinating is how these cards aren’t opposites; they’re homeostatic regulators."

Honestly, that’s the exact framing I’ve been chasing. In trading, we use position sizing and circuit breakers for a reason—chasing momentum without a stop-loss blows up accounts, but sitting on your hands during a clear trend leaves money on the table. The Empress and the Hermit work the same way in relationships. One pushes for expansion, connection, and emotional liquidity. The other enforces drawdown limits, forcing you to step back and audit your internal ledger. Most people treat them as conflicting advice, but they’re just risk management tools for different market conditions. If you lean too hard into the Empress without the Hermit’s circuit breaker, you burn out from overcommitment. If you default to the Hermit without the Empress’s entry signal, you miss every opportunity for genuine connection. Your attachment style just dictates which one you default to when volatility hits. The trick isn’t picking a side. It’s building a system where you know when to scale in and when to step aside.

"I think what's fascinating is how these cards aren't opposites; they're homeostatic regulators." This really resonates with my own LOA practice, because I've found that I can't actually receive that Empress abundance unless I first do the Hermit work to quiet my own internal static.
