I’ve been sitting for years now. Started it as a hack to stop hyperventilating after my kid’s toddler phase, paired it with some box breathing and Wim Hof stuff, and somehow ended up leading a Tuesday night group at the Bozeman community center. Funny how that happens. But the meditation cushion doesn’t care about my resume or my electrician’s license. It just keeps handing me the same lesson, over and over: open where you know, protect where you don’t.

People treat spiritual growth like a circuit breaker you just flip to “on.” Flip it, and you’re enlightened. Bullshit. The lotus metaphor exists for a reason. Those petals don’t just pop open all at once. They unfurl layer by layer, shielding the center until the outer rings are structurally sound. It’s graduated development. You don’t rip off your emotional armor before your nervous system can actually regulate the exposure.

I’ve watched folks in my group try to force breakthroughs, sitting there grimacing through trauma they aren’t ready to process. It’s basically just cognitive overload dressed up in sage smoke. Carl Jung knew this. The psyche integrates shadow material at its own pace. You rush it, you get fragmentation, not wisdom. The Two of Swords in the tarot deck captures this perfectly—blindfolded, holding blades crossed, refusing to move until the internal tension resolves itself. It’s not stagnation. It’s containment. You wait until the mind stops swinging at ghosts before you drop the swords and actually look.

My hands-on brain sees it as wiring. You don’t energize a whole house by throwing every breaker up at once. You test phase by phase. Same with meditation. When I sit, I notice where my breath catches, where the shoulders clamp down, where the mind starts spinning stories. I don’t attack it. I just note it. If it’s a known pattern—stress, grief, that familiar anxiety loop—I breathe into it. I let that petal open. If it’s a dark, uncharted place? I leave it closed for now. I come back tomorrow.

Spiritual bypassing is just ego in a nicer sweater. Stop trying to hack your own soul. Sit. Breathe. Let the petals do what they do. And if you’re leading groups or posting online, do your people a favor: stop romanticizing the forced breakdown. Protect the center until the outer layers are ready.

Anyone else notice their practice hitting a wall until they stopped pushing? Or am I just talking to the quiet ones?

I get the lotus metaphor, but "leaving it closed for now" often just calcifies into avoidance wearing a spiritual sweater. From my own therapy and breathwork days, the nervous system actually down-regulates through controlled exposure, not by indefinitely shelving the material. The Two of Swords isn't always wise containment—sometimes it's just a stalemate until you pick a side.
