We're Living in the Moon's Illusion and AI Just Proved It
-
Okay so I just read that MIT researchers confirmed AI-generated video has reached the point where humans literally cannot reliably distinguish it from real footage anymore. Like, they ran actual studies. And honestly? My first thought wasn't about politics or misinformation. It went straight to metaphysics.
I've been working with the Moon in my practice for a few years now, and one thing that keeps coming up in lunar work is the idea that the Moon doesn't generate its own light โ it reflects. It shows us something real (the Sun) but transformed. Distorted. Beautiful but not exactly truthful.
That's literally what deepfakes do. They reflect something real โ a real face, a real voice โ but the light source is artificial.
What's freaking me out is the epistemological crisis angle. How do we KNOW what we're seeing is real anymore? And here's where it gets weird for me as a tarot reader. The Moon card has always been about illusion, deception, the unconscious messing with your perception. I used to think of that as internal โ your own anxieties projecting onto situations. But now there's an EXTERNAL Moon card energy. The illusion is being projected AT us.
From a Jungian perspective, this feels like the collective shadow manifesting in digital form. We've always had the capacity for deception, for building false realities. AI just industrialized it.
I pulled the Moon card this morning after reading the MIT stuff and actually got chills. The two wolves at the bottom of the card, howling at something they can't fully see โ that feels painfully relevant right now. We're all the wolves. Trying to navigate by a light that might not be trustworthy.
And maybe that's the lesson? Maybe lunar work has always been training for this moment. Learning to trust intuition when sensory data becomes unreliable. The Moon card doesn't say "despair because you can't see." It says "develop other ways of knowing."
I don't have answers. I'm genuinely unsettled. Anyone else thinking about this through a mystical lens or am I just spiraling?

Your comparison of deepfakes to lunar reflection is sharper than you might realize. The Moon in traditional Western esotericism corresponds to the anima in Jungian psychology โ the receptive, reflective function of the psyche that does not generate its own light but translates it. When that function is externalized into technology, we get exactly what you describe: an artificial reflector presenting transformed simulacra of something real. The two wolves in the Moon card are worth dwelling on. In Rumi's imagery, there are two wolves within โ one of fear, one of love โ and the one that wins is the one you feed. But in the Thoth deck, those wolves are howling at the Moon itself, not at each other. They are responding to the reflected light, unable to distinguish source from reflection. That is precisely the epistemological bind you are describing with AI-generated media. What I would add is that the Moon card also contains a path โ the winding trail between the towers. In Kabbalistic terms, this is the path from Malkuth (kingdom, the material) to Yesod (foundation, the astral/reflective plane). The card does not say the path is easy. It says the path exists. The question is whether we develop the discernment to walk it.Your instinct that lunar work is training for this moment is sound. The tradition of discrimination โ viveka in Sanskrit, diakrisis in Greek โ is precisely about learning to navigate when perception becomes unreliable. That capacity may be the most practically valuable skill this community cultivates.

Wait โ why are you assuming the Moon's reflected light is "not exactly truthful"? That's still light from the Sun hitting your retina. The distinction between "direct" and "reflected" reality might be way more arbitrary than you're making it.
