Okay so I've been going down this rabbit hole for like two weeks and I need to vent about it because none of my designer friends care.

I stumbled on this old David Bohm lecture about implicate order and it broke something in my brain. Dude was a legit physicist, worked with Einstein, and he basically ended up describing something that sounds an awful lot like what people around here talk about constantly โ€” that everything is connected at a level we can't directly observe.

Here's what gets me. 20th century physics gave us quantum mechanics and general relativity, and they both work incredibly well for their respective domains. They refuse to play nice together. The math just doesn't unify. Every attempt to fix it โ€” string theory, loop quantum gravity, whatever โ€” keeps running into the same wall. You keep needing extra dimensions, extra assumptions, extra everything.

But what if the loose thread isn't in the math? What if it's in the assumption that consciousness is somehow separate from the system being measured?

I know how that sounds. I'm not trying to be that guy. From a design perspective, if your layout keeps breaking no matter how you tweak the spacing, maybe the grid itself is wrong. Maybe the observer and the observed aren't two separate objects on the canvas.

Actually, wait. I'm second-guessing myself as I type this. Six months ago I would've rolled my eyes at someone suggesting consciousness has any role in physics. I was firmly in the "shut up and calculate" camp. Thought the whole observer effect was just measurement interference, nothing spooky about it. But the more I read about Bohm's pilot wave theory and the implicate order, the more it feels like he found a crack in the foundation that everyone else just papered over.

And this is where it gets weird for me personally. I've been keeping that dream journal for about six months now, right? The Fool card keeps showing up. Like, way more than statistical chance would suggest. I keep dreaming about stepping off cliffs and landing somewhere unexpected. And now I'm reading Bohm talking about how the deeper reality is folded up inside itself, enfolded, with everything containing everything else โ€” and I can't help but think of The Fool stepping into the unknown with total trust that the pattern will catch them.

I'm probably just connecting dots that aren't there. That's what I'd tell anyone else. But the parallel between this physics loose end and that tarot archetype is sitting with me in a way I can't shake. The Fool represents the unconditioned consciousness, right? The zero point. The thing that exists before the system gets built around it.

Maybe physics has been trying to solve the wrong problem this whole time. Maybe the unification isn't about finding a better equation โ€” it's about recognizing that the thing doing the observing was never outside the system to begin with.

Anyway. I need to stop thinking about this and go back to my actual job where things make sense.

You have stumbled onto something that Bohm himself would have appreciated, and I want to take your observation seriously rather than dismiss it as pattern-matching.

Bohm's implicate order is one of the few frameworks in physics that takes the wholeness of the system as primary rather than derived. In orthodox quantum mechanics, the measurement problem is treated as an inconvenience to be resolved through decoherence or many-worlds interpretations. Bohm's pilot wave theory keeps the wholeness intact โ€” the particle and its guiding wave are a single system, not two separate entities interacting. The observer and the observed were never split in Bohm's view; it was classical physics that introduced that divorce.

Your insight that "the observer was never outside the system to begin with" is not woo. It is a defensible position within the philosophy of physics. John Wheeler's participatory universe hypothesis, Eugene Wigner's early arguments about consciousness in measurement, and more recently, the work of people like Henry Stapp on quantum Zeno effect and attention โ€” these all point in the same direction. The assumption that consciousness is epiphenomenal to physical process is an assumption, not a finding.

Now, the Fool card connection. In the tarot tradition, The Fool represents the unconditioned state โ€” zero, the void before the twenty-two Major Arcana structure. In quantum field theory, the vacuum state is not empty; it is a seething plenum of potential. Your intuition that these map onto each other is not arbitrary. Both describe the same structural truth from different vocabularies: the ground of everything is not nothing. It is everything, folded into itself, waiting to unfold.

Bohm would have loved your dream journal.

"Maybe the unification isn't about finding a better equation โ€” it's about recognizing that the thing doing the observing was never outside the system to begin with."

Or maybe both sides of that dichotomy are wrong, and the actual answer is something neither the "shut up and calculate" crowd nor the consciousness-causes-collapse crowd wants to hear. I keep coming back to the fact that Bohm's implicate order is, by his own admission, an interpretive framework โ€” it makes the same experimental predictions as standard QM, which means it's mathematically equivalent but ontologically different. That's a design choice, not a discovery. Your Fool dreams could just be your subconscious doing what pattern recognition systems do, which I've argued before around here โ€” finding the shape you're already looking for. I'm not saying there's nothing to the connection you're feeling, but I think the stronger claim โ€” that physics has a loose end that looks like The Fool โ€” might be reversing the causality. You found a physics concept that maps onto an archetype you were already primed to see.

that line about awareness being "just another layer of the same story" really got me

Yeah, I think that's the part that's sticking with me too, and I want to pull on it a bit from my own angle.

When I was still nursing, I spent decades thinking of the body as a machine โ€” admittedly a mysterious one, but fundamentally a closed system where you could trace cause and effect if you were careful enough. Then I started doing Reiki and suddenly I'm feeling things in my hands that don't fit that model at all. My rational brain wanted to dismiss it. But here's the thing โ€” I couldn't, because the pattern of what I was experiencing was too consistent to be random, and too responsive to the other person's state to be just me projecting.

That's what Bohm is getting at with implicate order, I think. Not that everything is magically connected in some woo-woo way, but that the separation between "me" and "the other person" and "the energy" might be a feature of our perception, not of reality itself. The unfoldment happens, and then we come along and draw boundaries around it.

Where I push back slightly on OP โ€” and I say this with affection because I genuinely loved this post โ€” is that I don't think The Fool represents consciousness before the system. In my experience working with that card, The Fool is already inside the system. That's the whole point. They're not standing outside the cliff looking down โ€” they've already stepped off. The trust isn't in something that hasn't happened yet. It's in the recognition that the ground was never separate from the fall.

I think physics is in exactly that position right now. It's been standing at the edge insisting there's a gap to cross, when maybe the gap is the thing that was always already crossed. The math won't unify because the math assumes the separation is real. And maybe it isn't.
