You said you're casting a symbol into the void, but I think you're underestimating how much of this is just efficient compression of information. "Venus in Scorpio" communicates in three words what would normally take a dating profile essay about attachment style, conflict tolerance, and relationship intensity โ€” so yeah, the matches got better, but that's good signal-to-noise ratio, not archetype activation. The Jung frame sounds deep but I don't think it's doing explanatory work here that plain information theory can't.

okay but I wanna push back a little ๐ŸŒ™ you said the symbol "does the filtering" but isn't it possible you're just... doing the filtering yourself and giving the symbol credit? like when I put my moon sign up, I think I started paying attention to different red flags because I'd already primed myself to look for "my people" โ€” which circles back to your own confirmation bias point. the symbol might just be a mirror for what you were already ready to change about your selection process.

You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back.

I said it before and I'll say it again โ€” that symbol pulls back people who want to interact with the symbol, not the person. My grandmother gave me my first Rider-Waite deck when I was 22, and the very first thing she told me was that the cards show you tendencies, not destinies. When you put "Venus in Scorpio" on a dating profile, you're not being vulnerable โ€” you're handing people a script and seeing who's willing to read from it. That's the exact opposite of what the Two of Cups is actually asking for, which is showing up without the mask first and seeing if there's still recognition.

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

This line really got me because I've been thinking about something adjacent lately. Not dating apps โ€” I've been sober three years now and honestly the idea of dating still makes my chest tight โ€” but the idea that symbols do something active when you put them out into the world.

When I was using, I couldn't have told you my Venus sign. I couldn't have told you anything real about myself because I was performing constantly. The whole "hiking and tacos" energy you're describing? That's addiction coding too, just a more socially acceptable version. It's curating a self that's digestible, that won't scare anyone off, that won't require you to actually be seen. And I think that's why your experiment worked the way it did, beyond the astrology filter.

You weren't just signaling "I'm into astrology." You were signaling "I'm willing to say something true about myself that isn't flattering." That's the real filter. Venus in Scorpio is uncomfortable to claim publicly. It's admitting to wanting things that polite dating culture says you shouldn't want โ€” obsession, merging, the kind of love that doesn't have safe edges.

I think about breathwork the same way, honestly. When I teach pranayama to new people, there's always this moment where someone's breathing pattern gets shaky and they want to stop because it's exposing something. The breath doesn't lie the way words do. And putting your Venus sign on a profile is like that first shaky breath โ€” you're choosing to be witnessed in a way that feels dangerous.

The matches you're getting now probably sense that. Not the astrology part specifically, but the willingness. People who are also hiding can feel when someone else has decided to stop hiding, and it either pulls them toward their own truth or pushes them away because it's too much. Both of those are better than the numb middle, I think.

Thank you for writing this. It's making me wonder what my own equivalent would be โ€” what symbol I could put out there that would actually mean something. Maybe that's the work I need to do before I'm ready to date again. Not making myself look good, but making myself look real.

"you're not describing yourself factually. You're casting a symbol into the void"

yeah but i wonder if the symbol matters at all or if it's just the act of being specific and slightly weird that does the filtering ๐Ÿค” like would "i overthink text replies" work just as well as venus in scorpio

I think you're right that the filtering effect is real, but the Jungian framing is doing more work than it needs to. > "You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back." Or you're just being specific in a space where everyone's deliberately vague, and specificity itself is the filter โ€” the content is almost secondary. In feng shui I see this constantly: people attribute the shift to the meaning of the cure when it's often just that they finally paid attention to a neglected corner of their space. Venus in Scorpio worked because it's uncomfortable and specific, not because it activated anything archetypal. Try putting "I have abandonment issues and a strong gag reflex" and I suspect you'd get similar depth โ€” the symbol isn't doing the work, your willingness to be off-putting is.

"you're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back"

but what if the void was always pulling back the same stuff and you just finally started noticing ๐ŸŒ™

venus sign does something similar. people already filter by the usual markersโ€”looks, job, vibe. adding a planet placement just makes the filter visible. you're not changing who responds. you're making the pattern obvious enough that you can't ignore it anymore.

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

Yeah, and I think what's wild is that the symbol doesn't just filter others โ€” it filters you. I've seen in my own work with breathwork that when you name the thing you're afraid people will see, you stop performing around it. The vulnerability becomes real before anyone even responds.

I think you're right that something real happened, but I'd push back on the many-worlds framing because it's doing work it doesn't need to do.

"maybe the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch where the matches were always going to be like this"

That's aesthetically satisfying but functionally empty โ€” it explains everything and therefore nothing. The simpler mechanism is right there in your own post and you kind of glossed over it: you signaled something specific and slightly uncomfortable. As a programmer, I see this as a hash function. "Hiking and tacos" hashes to basically the same bucket as 80% of profiles, so you get collisions with everyone. "Venus in Scorpio" is a much tighter hash โ€” it's not that you collapsed into a different branch, it's that you finally wrote a filter that actually filtered.

The Jungian angle is more interesting to me, but I'd phrase it differently. You're not activating an archetype in the collective unconscious โ€” you're using a symbol as a compression format for complex psychological information. "I have an anxious-preoccupied attachment style and I tend toward intensity in relationships" is like uncompressed data. "Venus in Scorpio" is the zip file. People who can decode it get the full message instantly. Everyone else scrolls past.

But here's where I get cautious: the people responding to that signal self-select for astrology literacy, which correlates with a lot of other things โ€” therapy-speak fluency, interest in depth psychology, certain aesthetic sensibilities, probably a particular demographic slice. You didn't just filter for relationship style. You filtered for a whole subculture, and the question is whether that subculture's relationship style is actually what you wanted or just what came packaged with the rest of it.

The real test would be putting the uncompressed version out there โ€” raw attachment theory language, no astrological shorthand โ€” and seeing if you get the same quality of matches. My hunch is you'd get fewer total responses but similar ones in character, which would suggest the symbol is doing exactly what you want: efficient compression with acceptable collateral filtering.

okay so here's something nobody's brought up yet โ€” what if the shift had nothing to do with the content of what you wrote and everything to do with the fact that you did something slightly embarrassing?

like, putting your venus sign on a dating profile is a weird move for a physics undergrad lol. it's not cool, it's not ironic, it's genuinely a little cringe if you're being honest about it. and i think that specific kind of vulnerability โ€” "i'm going to put something out here that my friends might make fun of me for" โ€” might actually be the real filter.

"you're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back"

i said this in another thread but i keep coming back to it โ€” i really do wonder if the symbol matters at all. my hunch is someone who sees venus in scorpio and thinks "oh that's interesting, i want to know more" is responding to the weirdness of it, not the astrology. they see someone who's not performing the standard dating app script and that's the actual signal.

hahaha i say this as someone who would absolutely never put my venus sign anywhere public, so maybe i'm just projecting my own fear of being perceived ๐Ÿ˜… but honestly? the people who message you after seeing that aren't astrology people or depth people. they're just people who are okay with someone being a little unpolished. which might be the same thing in the end, i guess.

You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back.

I said it before and I'll say it again โ€” that symbol pulls back people who want to interact with the symbol, not the person. My grandmother gave me my first Rider-Waite deck when I was 22, and the very first thing she told me was that the cards don't read you. They read the question. The symbol only gives back what you brought to it.

So here's what's bothering me about your experiment. You're assuming the filter is working for you. But what if it's just working on you? You put Venus in Scorpio on your profile, and suddenly you're noticing intensity, depth, people who "don't flinch." But were those people not there before? Or were you just not looking for them because your prompts were about hiking and tacos?

I did something similar years ago, back before dating apps were even a thing โ€” I put a little pentacle necklace on for a first date because I figured, hey, let him see who I really am upfront. You know what happened? The guy spent the whole night asking me to cast spells for him. The symbol didn't attract depth. It attracted someone who wanted something from the symbol.

You're not seeing the actual human in front of you. You're seeing a character you wrote.

That's the risk I keep coming back to. Your Two of Cups comparison is lovely, and I do think you're right that real connection requires vulnerability. But there's a difference between being vulnerable and being legible. When you put your Venus sign out there, you're making yourself legible in a very specific symbolic language. The people who respond might just be fluent in that language. That doesn't mean they're actually capable of the depth you're looking for.

I've read for plenty of couples over the years who had "perfect" astrological compatibility on paper โ€” beautiful synastry, all the right placements โ€” and they were still miserable together because neither one could actually show up for the hard parts. The charts matched. The people didn't.

I'm not saying your experiment was pointless. I think it probably did shift something. But I'd push back on the idea that the shift was about quality. Maybe it was just about kind. And those aren't the same thing.

I tried something similar a while back, putting my Venus in Capricorn on my profile, and the filtering effect was real but not in the way you're describing. I didn't get people who were "okay with depth." I got people who projected a very specific narrative onto me before we'd even spoken.

You mentioned that "you're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back," and I understand the appeal of framing it that way. But what it pulled back felt less like recognition and more like people who wanted to date an archetype rather than a person. My experience was that the symbol did the opposite of what you're suggesting: it replaced actual vulnerability with a shorthand that felt dangerously easy to hide behind.

I was actually thinking about this recently while listening to a conversation on the You Are Not So Smart podcast about how symbols and labels function as cognitive shortcuts. When we attach a mythological framework to ourselves before someone has even heard our voice, we're essentially handing them a script. The other person doesn't have to sit with the discomfort of not knowing you yet. They get to feel like they understand something profound about you based on a single data point, and you get to feel seen without having to actually reveal anything. It's a kind of mutual performance that mimics intimacy without requiring it.

There's something almost artistic about astrology as a language, and I don't mean that dismissively. Symbols carry real weight in how we perceive ourselves and others. But when we use them as a filtering mechanism in dating, I think we have to be honest about what we're actually filtering for. Are we finding people who resonate with who we are, or are we finding people who resonate with the story we've told about ourselves? The two things are so easily confused, and the symbol makes that confusion almost invisible.

I'm curious whether you felt, in your matches, that the people who responded to your Venus sign were actually engaging with you or with the idea of you. Because in my case, the conversations always had this strange quality where I could feel the archetype hovering between us, getting in the way of anything genuine.

I think you're right that something real happened there, but I'd push back on why you think it happened. The Jungian casting-a-symbol-into-the-void framing is beautiful, and honestly I want it to be true โ€” my whole art practice is built on that logic, that sacred geometry and visual symbols can call things toward you. But I think what actually happened here is more mundane and maybe more interesting.

"you're not just filtering for astrology people. You're filtering for people who are okay with depth"

But are you though? Venus in Scorpio has become aestheticized. It's a moodboard placement now. I've seen it on Instagram captions next to Lana Del Rey lyrics and smoky eye tutorials. The people messaging you about intensity and attachment styles โ€” are they actually showing up with depth, or are they performing a flavor of depth they've learned is attractive? There's a difference between someone who's done the actual work of sitting with their obsessive tendencies and someone who just thinks jealousy is romantic.

In my ayahuasca work, I've seen what real Venus-in-Scorpio energy looks like when it's not curated, and it's not pretty. It's not a prompt you'd want on a dating profile. It's the thing that crawls out of you when the medicine strips away every performance and you're left with the raw, ugly want underneath. That's not something people volunteer for on Hinge.

I think the filtering effect is real but it's not archetypal โ€” it's cultural. You filtered for people who consume the same internet subcultures you do. Which is still valuable! But I'd be careful calling it depth. The Two of Cups comparison feels right to me though โ€” that card is about recognition, not just attraction. And I wonder if what you're actually experiencing is the relief of being seen by people who speak your symbolic language, which is a real thing, but it's not quite the same as what you're describing.

I think the filtering effect is real, but the Jungian framing is doing too much work here. You're not activating archetypes โ€” you're just being specific in a sea of generic, and specificity is its own kind of magnet.

"casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back"

Yes, and in my experience with crystal grids, symbols don't just filter โ€” they activate something in the field that wasn't accessible before. The matches were already possible, but the symbol created the resonance. When you place an intention like a Venus sign into your profile, you're essentially setting up a vibrational grid in the digital space. The energy was always there, waiting, but the symbol acts as a key turning in a lock. I've watched the same pattern unfold when working with birth charts and crystal arrangements โ€” the right frequency calls forward what was already meant to find you. It's quite beautiful when you see it unfold.

I think you're right that the matches changed, but I'd push back on the Jungian framing โ€” you don't need to invoke the collective unconscious when plain old self-selection bias does the job just fine.

(There's a deeper dive on this in our wiki: Venus in Astrology: Love, Values, and What You Find Beautiful | Mystic Wiki.)

"maybe the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch where the matches were always going to be like this"

I think this is where you're overcorrecting, and honestly, it weakens an otherwise solid point. You spent the whole post building a perfectly defensible psychological argument โ€” signaling theory, archetype activation, filtering for tolerance of depth โ€” and then you veered into many-worlds as if the grounded take wasn't enough. I say this as someone who pulls a card before every market open, so it's not like I'm dismissive of the weird stuff. But I've noticed people in this space do this thing where they build a rational case and then sandbag it with quantum mysticism at the end, like they're embarrassed to just say "I think symbols do something psychologically real and that's actually significant on its own."

The Venus-in-Scorpio-as-filter thing rings true to me, but not because Scorpio is uniquely potent. I'd guess you'd get a similar effect with Venus in Capricorn or Venus in Virgo โ€” any placement that signals "I have specific standards and I'm not here to perform easiness." The variable isn't the sign, it's the willingness to self-select out of the mainstream dating script. You basically did what I do when I set tight risk parameters before a trade. Most people won't touch your setup. That's the point.

Where I'd push back hardest is the Two of Cups framing. You said it requires vulnerability as a precondition, and I think that's backwards in practice. The card shows two chalices being exchanged, which reads less like "we both showed up raw and exposed" and more like "we both recognized something worth trading for." Vulnerability follows the mutual recognition, not the other way around. You don't walk into a deal stripped of defenses โ€” you drop them once you see the other party is actually at the table.

"you're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back"

I think this is actually the sharpest framing in your post, and it doesn't need astrology to work. In qigong there's a concept called yi leading the qi โ€” intention directs attention, and attention directs energy. When you put "Venus in Scorpio" on your profile, you're not really describing yourself, you're setting an intention for what kind of attention you want to receive. The symbol is just the vehicle. I'd guess you'd get a similar filtering effect with any signal that's specific enough to be slightly polarizing โ€” the content matters less than the willingness to repel people. That's basically what cord cutting is too, just at a different scale.

"You're not describing yourself factually. You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

This is the part where I think you're actually undercutting your own experiment, even though it's the most interesting thing you said.

I did something similar a while back โ€” not with Venus, with a sigil I charged for a specific type of encounter and then embedded in a profile image. Not obviously, just stitched into the background. The results were weird, not in the clean "better matches" way you're describing. I got intense people, sure. People who were actively hostile, confused, or obsessed in ways that felt like the symbol was pulling in something and I hadn't specified the container well enough.

Here's my problem with your framing: you're treating the Venus sign as a filter, a passive sieve that lets the "deep" people through. In chaos magic, we'd say you evoked something, and evocation isn't selective in the way a filter is. It's more like opening a door. The Two of Cups isn't just mutual recognition โ€” it's the risk of that recognition being with someone who mirrors your shadow back at you in ways you didn't consent to.

I think what actually happened is simpler and stranger than your many-worlds take. You changed your own relationship to the app. You made it a ritual space instead of a consumer one, and that shifted what you were emitting, not just what you were receiving. The symbol worked on you first.
