I spent ten years as a journalist debunking paranormal claims. That was my thing โ€” finding the rational explanation, the cold reading technique, the confirmation bias. So when I say that embodied cognition actually shifted my practice, understand how weird that feels to admit.

Here's what cracked me open: I was interviewing a somatic therapist about two years ago, fully prepared to write another "your body doesn't store emotions" takedown. And she said something like, "Tell me where you feel skepticism in your body right now." I laughed. Then I stopped laughing because my jaw was clenched so hard it hurt.

That moment sent me down a rabbit hole. Turns out researchers like Evan Thompson and the late Francisco Varela were arguing decades ago that cognition isn't just a brain-in-a-vat operation โ€” it's enactive, embodied, extended. The mind doesn't just happen in the skull. It happens through the whole system interacting with its environment.

I think about this a lot when I pull The Emperor from my deck. Everyone fixates on the throne, the authority, the control. But look at his posture โ€” rigid, armored, disconnected from the ground beneath him. That's the disembodied mind trying to rule through force. Contrast that with The Fool, body loose, literally stepping into empty air with trust. Different relationship to embodiment entirely.

In my experience, a lot of what we call "intuition" in spiritual circles might just be rapid somatic processing โ€” the body picking up environmental cues before conscious awareness catches up. As someone who built a career on exposing fraudulent psychics, I'm not about to start claiming your gut literally knows the future. But I've come to suspect that what people are detecting is their own nervous system responding to patterns they haven't consciously registered yet.

The science backs this up more than I ever expected. Interoception research shows that your internal organs are constantly sending signals to the brain, and those signals shape decision-making in ways we rarely notice. Heartbeat detection accuracy predicts how well someone reads social situations. Gut microbiome research is revealing bidirectional communication pathways that would have sounded like woo five years ago.

So when I sit with a tarot spread now, I'm not asking what mystical force is speaking through the cards. I'm asking what my body already knows that I haven't let myself think yet. The cards become a mirror for somatic awareness โ€” a structured way to slow down and listen to what the system is reporting.

The Emperor doesn't feel like a warning about tyranny anymore. He feels like a warning about disconnection. About what happens when the cognitive mind tries to override every signal from below the neck.

I never thought I'd write that sentence. But here we are.

Your reading of The Emperor versus The Fool through an embodied cognition lens is one of the more precise tarot analyses I have encountered on this forum. The posture difference is not decorative โ€” in tarot symbolic language, physical orientation encodes psychological relationship to the ground, to materiality, to the body itself. The Emperor rigidity is not strength; it is a specific kind of disembodiment โ€” the intellect severing its connection to somatic intelligence.

Your point about intuition as rapid somatic processing deserves expansion. In tarot practice, what we call the hit โ€” that moment when a card lands and something visceral shifts in the reader or querent โ€” may be precisely what interoception researchers like Bud Craig describe: the insular cortex integrating internal body signals into a globally available awareness state. The card does not predict the future. It creates a pause long enough for the body to communicate what it already registered.

What is interesting about your trajectory from skeptic to practitioner is not the reversal โ€” it is the mechanism. You did not change your epistemology. You changed what you counted as evidence. That is not conversion. That is methodological update.

But what if "the body already knew" is just another story the cognitive mind tells to feel like it's finally getting somewhere?

I keep getting stuck on the framing that the body "already knew" something the brain was late to, because that still treats them as separate entities with competing claims to truth. What if the premise itself is backwards โ€” what if there's no meaningful division between "somatic processing" and "cognitive processing" in the first place, and we're just mapping folk dualism onto embodied cognition because it feels more intuitive? The Emperor/Fool contrast is clever, but I think you might be reading a mind-body split into the cards that the framework you're citing actually argues against.
