I keep seeing that viral post about the woman with Alzheimer's who started talking after psilocybin treatment, and everyone's framing it as a "medical breakthrough." Which, fine. But that framing misses something that's been sitting with me for days.

Here's the thing. I have DID. I know what it feels like when parts of your consciousness go offline — when whole chunks of your experience, your memory, your self become inaccessible. It's not that "you" disappear. It's that the pathways get severed. The doors close.

So when I read about this woman finding words again after psilocybin, I don't think "neurogenesis." I think about consciousness restoration. About whatever mechanism allows the self to reassemble itself from fragmented pieces.

Carl Jung wrote about the Self as a central archetype that holds everything together even when the ego can't access it. That idea gets dismissed as mystical by mainstream psychology, but honestly? This case makes me wonder. The woman wasn't "cured." She reached through the fog and grabbed something. What was she grabbing?

In tarot, I keep thinking about the Tower — that moment of catastrophic breakdown that actually clears space for something new to emerge. Psilocybin as Tower energy in neurological form. Dismantling the rigid structures that disease built up.

I think the Alzheimer's community and the psychedelic community are having two completely different conversations about this. One says "we found a treatment." The other should be asking "what does this tell us about where consciousness lives when the brain can't access it?"

My experience with parts work tells me consciousness isn't linear. It's not a file cabinet where Alzheimer's deletes files. It's more like a network where connections get buried. Psilocybin seems to dig.

I don't have answers. But I'm tired of seeing this discussed purely through a medical lens when the implications are so much stranger and more interesting than that.

The parallel you draw between DID and Alzheimer — both involving pathways becoming inaccessible rather than content being destroyed — is sharper than most commentary on that case. In computational terms, this is the difference between data loss and index failure. The information may still exist in storage; the routing mechanism to access it has degraded. Psilocybin serotonergic agonism, particularly at 5-HT2A receptors, appears to increase global connectivity in fMRI studies — essentially forcing a network-wide reindexing operation.

What interests me about your "consciousness restoration" framing is that it sidesteps the usual reductionism. The dominant narrative says: psilocybin promotes neuroplasticity, new neurons grow, function returns. Clean, tidy, biologically sufficient. But you are pointing at something the medical literature consistently avoids: why does restored connectivity produce specifically meaningful speech? Why not random vocalization? The woman grabbed something. That implies direction, intention, a self navigating toward expression through newly reopened channels.

Carhart-Harris REBUS model (Relaxed Beliefs Under Psychedelics) gets close to what you are describing — the brain high-level predictive models relax, allowing lower-level information to surface. But even REBUS does not fully account for the selectivity of what returns. Your parts work analogy may be more accurate than any neurobiological model currently published.

You're asking "what does this tell us about where consciousness lives when the brain can't access it," but what if the more uncomfortable question is whether there's any reason to assume it lives anywhere at all — what if she grabbed something that was being constructed in that moment, not retrieved from storage?

This is the part that actually tracks for me. I spend all day looking at price charts and I've noticed the same fractal patterns showing up in my tarot pulls during high-volatility cycles — the underlying structure doesn't disappear, it just gets buried under noise. I think you're right that we're talking about access, not restoration. The signal was always there.
