Runes feel "cleaner" to a lot of people. Elder Futhark, 24 symbols, binary meanings that feel almost like machine code. As a dev, that appealed to me. But here's the problem I kept running into โ the interpretive space is too wide. You pull Fehu and it could mean wealth, cattle, mobile assets, or greed depending on which source you're referencing. That ambiguity doesn't help me at 6 AM before coffee.
Tarot, specifically Rider-Waite-Smith, anchors you with visual data. And that matters more than people realize. Dual coding theory โ Allan Paivio's work back in the 70s โ suggests that information encoded both verbally and visually is more reliably retrieved and processed. When I pull the Three of Swords, I'm not just working with an abstract concept. My brain processes the actual image: three swords piercing a heart, rain in the background. The visual scaffolding constrains my wandering associations in a useful way.
From a Jungian perspective, I think tarot images function better as genuine prompts for active imagination. The runes tend to trigger what I'd call "dictionary lookup" in my head โ I'm retrieving a stored meaning rather than letting the symbol work on my unconscious directly. With tarot, the pictorial element bypasses that purely lexical retrieval path and engages the image-making faculty instead. I'm not recalling a definition; I'm reacting to a scene.
Your mileage may vary depending on how you internalized the systems initially. Someone who learned runes through meditation rather than reference books might have a completely different experience. But for structured daily pulls where I need a quick, interpretable signal without spiraling into semantic ambiguity, the visual encoding of tarot wins consistently. I still keep my rune bag on the desk for larger readings where that open interpretive space becomes an advantage rather than a bug. For morning check-ins, though, RWS does the job with less cognitive overhead.

But couldn't the "dictionary lookup" problem with runes actually be a feature if what you want from a daily pull is to break out of your usual interpretive ruts? I'm a designer, so maybe I'm biased toward visual systems too, but I keep thinking about how Jung talked about the danger of images becoming too fixed in the psyche โ like, at a certain point the RWS imagery might be too scaffolding, too pre-digested, and you're no longer doing active imagination so much as navigating a really pretty flowchart.
