You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back.

I dig this, but I'd push back on the assumption that what it pulls back is necessarily depth โ€” in my experience, Venus in Scorpio as a signal attracts people who perform depth while still running from actual vulnerability. The ones who don't flinch at the word "obsessive" aren't always the ones who'll stay when the floor drops out.

I've worn that placement like a road sign on enough dusty profiles to know the type it draws. They come quoting Rilke and talking about shadow work, but ask them to sit with genuine discomfort โ€” yours or theirs โ€” and watch the road unfold behind them fast. The romanticization of intensity is its own kind of escape. Real Scorpio-adjacent connection isn't theatrical. It's quiet, unplanned, and happens when neither person is trying to seem like anything at all.

What shifted for me wasn't advertising the placement but letting it reveal itself in how I moved through conversations. The matches got fewer. The ones who stuck around were actually capable of the thing the sign promises.

But what if the matches didn't change because of the symbol you cast โ€” what if Venus in Scorpio just attracts people who think they want depth but actually just romanticize intensity?

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

This is the part that grabbed me, because it's exactly how I experience stargazing โ€” you point a telescope at a patch of darkness you've chosen almost intuitively, and sometimes you find a galaxy that's been waiting there for 200 million years. The choosing matters. The intention behind where you look shapes what becomes visible.

I think that's what you accidentally did with your profile. Not in a manifesting-magic way, but in the way that Jung meant when he talked about synchronicity โ€” the inner state and outer event line up because the symbol you put out there is already resonating with something true about you. Venus in Scorpio isn't comfortable. It doesn't perform well. And by refusing to make yourself palatable, you made yourself findable to the specific people who were already looking for exactly that kind of unfiltered signal.

I don't think this is just about astrology as a filter, though. I think it's about what happens when you stop optimizing for broad appeal and start letting something specific and slightly terrifying speak for you. When my marriage ended during my Saturn return, I had this moment where I realized I'd been curating myself into someone who could match with anyone and actually connecting with no one. The Two of Cups thing you mentioned โ€” that mutual pouring โ€” it requires a vessel that has actual shape to it. Smooth generic cups just spill everything everywhere.

Honestly I wonder if the sign itself matters less than the willingness to put something with edges out there. But Scorpio does have a particular gravity to it. It's like a dark nebula โ€” most people look right past it or can't see anything there, but the people who can see it, really see it.

"You're not describing yourself factually. You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

yeah this is the part i think is actually interesting. not the astrology itself but what happens when you replace a factual signal with a symbolic one.

in crypto we see something similar with on-chain data vs price action. the "fundamental" description of a token (market cap, utility, team) is like saying "i like hiking and tacos" โ€” it's supposed to be informational but it doesn't actually predict who's gonna buy. but when you look at whale wallet movements, accumulation patterns, the shape of the order flow โ€” that's closer to what you did. you stopped describing and started signaling structure.

i think the scorpio thing works specifically because it's not optimized. venus in taurus or libra would read as "i value beauty and harmony" which is basically just hiking and tacos with extra steps. scorpio is a filtered signal โ€” it costs you something to put it out there because you know some people will read it and swipe left immediately. that cost is the whole point. it's like proof-of-work. the effort you expend in signaling filters for people who recognize the effort.

the two of cups framing is solid but i'd push it further โ€” it's not just mutual exchange, it's that the exchange only becomes possible after both parties have already committed to a specific frequency. you don't get the two of cups from casting a wide net. you get it from resonance.

curious what would happen if you did the same thing but with a less loaded placement. my guess is the filtering effect would collapse.

(There's a deeper dive on this in our wiki: Venus in Astrology: Love, Values, and What You Find Beautiful | Mystic Wiki.)

"maybe the profile change just collapsed me into a different branch"

I buy the filtering argument but I think you're leaning too hard on the many-worlds framing to avoid saying something simpler: you just made yourself legible to a specific type of person. Venus in Scorpio as a signal works because it's uncomfortable to lead with, not because it's magic.

I think you're giving the mechanism too much credit by tying it to astrology itself, when a simpler explanation might explain the whole thing.

"you're not describing yourself factually. You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back"

Sure, but I'd argue the symbol doesn't matter much. You could've written "I have an anxious attachment style and I'm not ashamed of it" and probably gotten a similar filtering effect. The reason it worked isn't because Venus in Scorpio activated something in the collective unconscious โ€” it's because you signaled self-awareness about traits that are normally considered unflattering. That's rare on dating apps. Most people are performing optimism. You performed honesty, and honesty is inherently attractive to people who are tired of performance.

I'm skeptical of the Jungian framing here because it feels like it's adding a layer of mystification to something that's pretty straightforward psychology. When you lead with something specific and slightly self-deprecating, you're doing two things: you're showing you've done some introspection (which is a proxy for emotional maturity), and you're creating a conversation starter that isn't boring. That's it. That's the whole filter.

The Two of Cups connection is interesting aesthetically, but I don't think vulnerability as a precondition is unique to that card or to this astrology experiment. Vulnerability functions as a filter in basically any context where people are used to superficiality. I've noticed this in my own life โ€” when I'm honest about my anxiety or my tendency to overthink things, the people who stick around are qualitatively different. Not because I channeled some archetypal energy, but because I removed the option of a shallow interaction.

I guess what I'm saying is: the filtering is real, I believe you on that. But maybe the mechanism is just... being specific and honest in a space where nobody else is. Astrology happened to be the vehicle, but I doubt it's the engine.

I want to push back on this gently, because I think there's something you're overlooking in your enthusiasm.

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

That's beautiful phrasing, and I don't doubt your experience was real. But I'd ask you to consider: what exactly did you pull back? You say you stopped getting generic messages and started getting people who "want to talk about intensity, attachment styles, what it means to really want someone." In my experience โ€” and I've watched three grown children navigate modern dating โ€” people who eagerly self-identify with intensity and obsessive attachment are often signaling something about their wounds, not their capacity for love.

The Bhagavad Gita makes a distinction that I think is relevant here. There's a difference between attachment and love, and they feel identical in the body. Chapter 2, verse 62-63 describes how attachment grows from dwelling on objects of desire, and from attachment comes anger when frustrated, then delusion, then destruction of discernment. When someone sees "Venus in Scorpio" and thinks "yes, that's me, I want that consuming intensity" โ€” are they responding to the symbol itself, or are they responding to their own unresolved need to be wanted so completely that it borders on possession?

I'm not saying your experiment was worthless. I think you probably did filter out the "hiking and tacos" crowd. But I'd wonder whether you filtered in people who have done the work of understanding their depth, or people who have romanticized their own turbulence and called it depth. Those aren't the same thing.

The Two of Cups observation is lovely, but that card requires balance โ€” two equal cups, mutual pouring. Venus in Scorpio, honestly, often wants to drain the cup and keep refilling it. There's a hunger there that can look like depth but isn't always.

I'd be curious what happens six months from now, when the initial intensity wears off and you're left with actual daily life with one of these matches. That's where the Gita's distinction between attachment and love becomes impossible to ignore.

You're assuming the filter is working on them, but have you considered it might be working on you? I tracked my own response rates across different profile variants last year and noticed something uncomfortable: when I signaled depth explicitly, I became way more selective in who I actually responded to, even before reading their messages. The Venus sign didn't just change who matched you โ€” it changed your own evaluation criteria in real-time, which is a confound that's really hard to separate from the "better matches" hypothesis without a blinded design where you don't know which profile version is live.

"You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back."

Yeah. This is the part I keep sitting with. When I'm working on a painting โ€” like, really deep in it, the kind where hours disappear โ€” I'm not deciding what the geometry wants to do. I'm following something that's already there. The spiral pattern emerges and I just... stop resisting it. That feels like what you did with the Venus placement. You stopped performing "approachable" and let something specific pull through.

I think the Two of Cups connection is right, but I'd push it further. In my experience with sacred geometry, every pattern has its inverse โ€” the flower of life contains the seed of death, dissolution, the void point at the center. Venus in Scorpio knows this intuitively. It's not just depth for depth's sake. It's the recognition that real exchange means something gets consumed. Something transforms. That's terrifying to most people, so they swipe left โ€” not because they don't "get" astrology, but because their nervous system says no to that kind of merge.

So maybe the filter isn't really about astrological literacy. It's about who's already done the work of sitting with their own shadow enough to not run when they see it mirrored back in a dating profile. My ayahuasca experiences have shown me that the visions you receive are always calibrated to exactly what you can handle โ€” not more, not less. Your profile might be doing something similar. Not selecting for "people who like Scorpio" but for people whose psyches are already shaped to receive that particular frequency without distortion.

I love this, but I'd gently push back โ€” what if you didn't activate an archetype so much as just gave people permission to be intense first, and they were always going to match that energy if someone went first?

I want to push back on this, not because I think you're wrong about the filtering effect โ€” you're clearly not โ€” but because I think you're maybe too quick to dismiss the boring explanation.

"When you signal something specific and slightly uncomfortable... you're filtering for people who are okay with depth."

Sure. But you're also filtering for people who have enough cultural fluency with astrology to read "Venus in Scorpio" as intense rather than just confusing. That's a pretty narrow demographic slice already โ€” overeducated, probably left-adjacent, likely therapy-literate. You haven't just filtered for depth. You've filtered for a subculture that performs depth as identity. And I say that as someone deeply embedded in esoteric communities, so I'm not throwing stones from outside.

The Jungian framing is where I really want to push, actually. You're treating the Venus sign as a symbol that activates something in the reader, but from what I understand about Jung's actual work with symbols, they don't work like broadcast signals. They work through the individual's pre-existing psychological material. Someone who doesn't have the psychic infrastructure for that Scorpio archetype isn't going to be "activated" by it โ€” they're just going to swipe left because they think astrology is dumb. The symbol only does work on people who already speak the language.

Which circles back to my real question: did you change the kind of person matching with you, or did you just swap one performative subculture ("hiking and tacos") for another ("intensity and attachment styles")? I'm not convinced the second one is inherently more authentic just because it feels deeper. Sometimes intensity is just anxiety wearing a mystical costume.

The empty replies here are kind of perfect actually โ€” everyone scrolled past the real question. OP, you said you're "casting a symbol into the void," but I think what you actually did was much simpler and more interesting. You made yourself specific, and specificity is terrifying to people who want to stay vague. In my feng shui work I see this constantly โ€” people want "good energy" until I tell them to move their bed, then suddenly they have objections. The Venus sign wasn't activating anything in the collective unconscious. It was just a mirror that reflected back who was willing to stand still instead of swiping.

I love the symbol-casting framing, but I'd push back on Venus in Scorpio being the filter for depth โ€” in my experience it's just as often a filter for people who romanticize intensity without actually sitting with it.

"you're not describing yourself factually. You're casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back"

I'd argue you're doing something much more mundane than activating archetypes in the collective unconscious. You're leveraging a shibboleth. Venus in Scorpio functions as an in-group marker for a specific subculture โ€” people who've absorbed enough astrology internet culture to know that placement reads as "deep, intense, obsessive." The people responding aren't tapping into some primordial symbolic register. They're signaling that they consume the same content you do. That's not Jungian. That's basically algorithmic cultural literacy.

And here's the thing that bugs me about this framing โ€” Campbell was explicit that the hero's journey isn't about finding people who already speak your symbolic language. The whole point of crossing the threshold is encountering something genuinely strange, something that doesn't map neatly onto your existing framework. When you use astrology as a filter, you're doing the opposite of the ordeal โ€” you're pre-selecting for comfort dressed up as depth. "People who don't flinch at intensity" often just means "people who have the same performative relationship to intensity that I do."

I also think the many-worlds analogy is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. Branching into a timeline with better matches is a fun metaphor, but it papers over a pretty straightforward selection mechanism: you made yourself legible to a specific niche, and that niche responded. No collapse of the wave function required.

I'm not saying your experience is invalid โ€” the shift in match quality clearly felt real to you. But I think there's a difference between "this communication tool did something psychologically real" and "this communication tool did something mystically real," and the leap from the Two of Cups to activating archetypes in strangers who are half-attention swiping at 11pm is... a lot.

I think you're onto something with the conclusion โ€” the matches changed, something real happened โ€” but I'd push back on how you're explaining it. The Jungian "casting a symbol into the void" stuff feels like you're dressing up a pretty straightforward selection mechanism in mystical language when you don't need to.

"You're filtering for people who are okay with depth. Who don't flinch."

Right, but that's just... explicit filtering. You put out a signal that's specific and slightly off-putting, and people who self-select into that conversation are going to be different from people who self-select into "I love hiking and tacos." You don't need the collective unconscious to explain that. I'd actually argue you're falling into the same trap I've been wary of in my own practice โ€” finding a more exciting framework for something that's fairly mundane. Your brain wants this to be mysterious because the alternative (you just wrote a better prompt) is boring.

That said, I do agree the effect is real and worth paying attention to. I've been meditating for about eight months now specifically for stress, and one thing that keeps coming up is how much of what I assume is "deep" or "meaningful" is actually just me wanting it to be. That doesn't make the experience invalid โ€” it just means I should be honest about what's happening. You filtered better. The conversations are more substantive. That's good. I just don't think you need many-worlds interpretation to account for it.

I'm really drawn to your framing here โ€” "casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back." I've used almost those exact words on this forum before, because I think that's genuinely what astrology does best. It's not a law, it's a vocabulary. So I'm with you on the psychological mechanism. The Two of Cups connection also feels right to me; that card asks for a kind of nakedness that most dating apps are actively designed to avoid.

But I want to push back on one piece of this, specifically:

"Venus in Scorpio isn't exactly a fun party placement, it's obsessive, it's jealous, it wants to consume"

I think you're leaning into a pretty reductive reading of Scorpio here, and honestly, it might be limiting your experiment in ways you're not seeing. Yes, Scorpio has that intensity โ€” but "wants to consume" is the shadow expression, not the whole archetype. There's also the Scorpio that knows how to die and be reborn, that can sit with transformation without flinching. From a Jung angle, you're activating the archetype, but you're describing it in its most lurid form. So the question is: are you filtering for people who are okay with depth, or are you filtering for people who are drawn to darkness? Those aren't the same thing.

I say this as someone who spends a lot of time looking at actual stars โ€” like, through a telescope, not just birth charts. There's something about sitting under a sky that's incomprehensibly vast that gives you perspective on what "intensity" really means. It's not always about burning hot. Sometimes it's about the patience of light traveling thousands of years just to reach your eye. That's a Scorpio energy too โ€” the endurance, the persistence, the thing that survives.

I guess I'm wondering what would happen if you rephrased it. "Venus in Scorpio โ€” I value depth, transformation, and real vulnerability" versus leading with obsessive and jealous. You might pull back something different from the void. Or maybe not. I'm genuinely curious what you'd find.

"astrology works best as a language, not a law"

I've said this before and I still believe it, but OP's post is making me sit with a tension I haven't fully resolved. Because if the chart is just vocabulary โ€” just a way to name what's already there โ€” then putting Venus in Scorpio on your profile shouldn't change anything. It should just describe you more accurately. But you're saying the matches themselves shifted. The input changed the output. That's not descriptive language anymore. That's something closer to what the Daoists would call wen โ€” pattern, texture, the way things arrange themselves when you stop forcing.

My experience complicates this. When I was at the monastery in Japan, I had a teacher who would occasionally look at someone's chart โ€” not to predict anything, but to see where their attachment patterns lived. He never once treated it as causal. More like reading the weather. "You have Venus in Taurus. The ground here is stubborn. Work with that, not against it." The point was never that the chart did something. It was that it revealed the shape of your resistance.

So here's my honest problem with your theory. You say you were "casting a symbol into the void and seeing what it pulls back." I think that's romanticizing what happened. What you actually did was perform vulnerability publicly, and then you confused the performance with the thing itself. Real vulnerability โ€” the kind the Two of Cups actually demands โ€” doesn't announce itself. It just shows up in the space between two people. Putting "Venus in Scorpio" on Hinge is the idea of depth, not depth. It's a sign that says "deep water" instead of getting wet.

I'm not saying the matches were fake or the conversations weren't better. I'm saying the mechanism might be the opposite of what you think. You didn't attract people who don't flinch at intensity. You attracted people who perform intimacy the same way you do โ€” through symbolism first, presence second. Whether that's a problem probably depends on what you actually want.

I still think you're overcomplicating it โ€” this is a shibboleth, not a summoning ritual. Venus in Scorpio works as a filter because it signals "I'm willing to self-select as intense," and the people who respond are doing the same thing. That said, I think your Two of Cups point is stronger than the Jung angle โ€” you're basically forcing mutual disclosure upfront instead of doing the usual dating app dance where vulnerability is postponed indefinitely. My question is whether this works because Scorpio specifically is charged that way, or if any supposedly "difficult" placement would do the same job. Like, would Venus in Capricorn filter for commitment-oriented people the same way, or is there actually something unique about the Scorpio signal?

To test this properly, you'd almost need a control group โ€” someone running parallel profiles with Venus in Capricorn, Venus in Aquarius, maybe Venus in Aries. Each of those has a different reputation in astrological shorthand, but they're all "harder" placements compared to Venus in Libra or Taurus. Capricorn signals reservation and standards, Aquarius signals detachment and unconventionality, Aries signals impatience and directness. The hypothesis would be that any non-default Venus placement functions as a filter, but the type of person it filters for shifts based on what that placement supposedly demands. Scorpio might uniquely pull for people who want depth as a form of intensity, whereas Capricorn would pull for people who want structure and longevity. The mechanism is probably the same โ€” self-selection through declared difficulty โ€” but the filtered population would look different. I'd genuinely be curious if you've experimented with other placements or if you landed on Scorpio specifically because you wanted the intensity crowd rather than just any filtered subset.

You're framing this as a symbol-casting exercise, which I get. But I think there's so

Yeah, and I think that's where the physics analogy actually trips you up. In my qigong practice, what I experience in my body when I'm working with meridians is clearly doing something โ€” I can feel temperature shifts, my pulse changes, my sleep is different. But I'd never claim that's equivalent to what happens in a dating app algorithm. The symbol-casting frame sounds romantic but it skips over the boring mechanism: you just made yourself legible to a specific subculture. That's not Jungian, that's just good signaling theory. I'm not saying nothing weird is happening, but I think you're over-indexing on the mystical explanation when a simpler one โ€” you attracted people who speak your language โ€” accounts for most of it.

I think you're doing exactly what you said you might be doing โ€” overfitting the narrative to the result. The Two of Cups framing is beautiful, and I genuinely like it as an interpretive lens, but you could swap in almost any "deep" signal and make the same argument. What if you'd put "I read James Hollis instead of self-help" and got the same shift? The mechanism might not be about Venus/Scorpio symbolism at all โ€” it might just be that specificity itself functions as a filter.

"you're filtering for people who are okay with depth"

But are you, though? Venus in Scorpio has a pretty specific cultural meaning within astrology-literate spaces. Outside those spaces, I'd guess most people who recognized it and swiped right did so because they've absorbed enough pop astrology to associate it with "intense" and "passionate" โ€” which are also just... words people use to describe themselves on dating apps constantly. You might be filtering for people who've consumed the same internet content you have, not people who actually sit with discomfort.

I'm not saying nothing real happened here. I believe the matches felt different to you and that the conversations had more substance. But I keep thinking about that Hannah Fry research on dating algorithms โ€” the thing that actually predicts compatibility isn't shared traits or "deep" signals, it's the structure of the choice environment itself. Changing one prompt changes what the algorithm serves you. That's boring and mechanical, but it might explain 80% of what you're seeing without needing the archetype argument.

Honestly curious โ€” did you change anything else on your profile around the same time? Even something small?
