Why sacred geometry keeps breaking me open (and I think that's the point)
-
I've been sitting with this for a few days and figured I'd finally write it out.
Last week I was at a friend's place and they had this print of the Flower of Life on the wall. Big, detailed, the whole thing. I sat down near it and within maybe five minutes I started feeling that thing โ that dropping sensation in my body, like my chest was cracking open in a way that wasn't painful, just deeply uncomfortable.
For context: I do somatic experiencing work. Have been for about two years now. So I've learned to just... be with whatever shows up instead of scrambling away from it. But this hit different.
What I think happened, and I'm still untangling it, is that the geometry bypassed my verbal mind entirely. Peter Levine's whole thing with somatic experiencing is that trauma gets stuck in the body, right? It's not a narrative problem, it's a physiological one. And I think certain patterns โ repeating, interlocking, balanced โ can speak directly to that stuck place. No words needed.
The High Priestess keeps coming up for me in readings lately, and I keep sitting with what she represents. That silent, receptive knowing. The geometry did something similar. It wasn't telling me anything. It was just... present, and my nervous system responded to that presence.
I don't think this is magic, exactly. Or maybe it is. I honestly don't care about drawing that line anymore. What I know is that my body recognized something in that pattern, and it trusted it enough to let go a little. That's the part that keeps breaking me open โ the realization that my body has been waiting for permission to soften this whole time, and sometimes that permission comes from something as simple as intersecting circles on a wall.

Your somatic experiencing training gave you the exact framework needed for what happened. Peter Levine teaches that the body completes what the mind cannot process, and I think sacred geometry operates in that same pre-verbal territory. It does not tell you anything because it does not need to. The pattern itself is the message.I have seen this in my own practice more times than I can count. A client sits with a crystal grid or a geometric print and something in their nervous system simply... softens. Not because they understood the meaning of the symbol intellectually, but because their body recognized a pattern that predates language. The Flower of Life is ancient for a reason - it appears in the Temple of Osiris at Abydos, in Chinese temples, in medieval manuscripts across Europe. These cultures did not coordinate. They independently arrived at the same form because it corresponds to something fundamental about how biological systems organize themselves.Your connection to the High Priestess is telling. That card represents receptive wisdom - the kind that arrives not through analysis but through allowing. The geometry did not push anything on you. It held space, and your body chose to open. That distinction between pushing and holding is central to how real energetic work functions.I work a lot with light frequencies in my practice, and I have come to believe that certain geometric ratios - the golden proportion, the vesica piscis - act as bridges between the dense physical body and the more subtle layers. They are not magic in the supernatural sense. They are interfaces. The way a prism reveals colors that were already present in white light, these patterns reveal layers of your own awareness that were already present but filtered out.The cracking-open feeling you described is not unusual. It can be disorienting the first few times. Trust it. Your body knows what it is doing, even when your mind is still catching up.

I want to push back on this, not because I think you're wrong about the experience itself โ something clearly happened for you โ but because I think there's an assumption buried in your framing that's worth interrogating.
You said: "the geometry bypassed my verbal mind entirely" and that it "speak directly to that stuck place." But how do you know that's what happened? What if the pattern didn't bypass anything? What if your verbal mind โ your expectation, your existing framework around sacred geometry, the cultural weight these symbols carry โ was doing a enormous amount of work before the somatic response kicked in?
I ask this because I work with Elder Futhark runes, and I've seen people have intense physical responses to them that they attribute to some direct, pre-cognitive channeling. And sometimes maybe that's what's happening. But I've also watched those same responses collapse when the context shifts โ when someone who doesn't know what the symbol "means" encounters it and feels nothing at all. That doesn't invalidate the experience for the person who had it, but it does complicate the idea that the geometry itself is doing the speaking.
I think what you're describing might be closer to what you said about the High Priestess โ a receptive state that you were already primed for, through two years of somatic work, through whatever symbolic literacy you'd built up around these patterns. The geometry might have been the trigger, not the source. And I'd push back gently on the idea that there's a clean separation between "verbal mind" and "body response" in a moment like that. Your body knew what that symbol was supposed to do before it did it, maybe.
That doesn't make it less real or less valuable. But I think the question of whether the pattern itself carries something vs. whether you brought something to the pattern โ that distinction actually matters, especially if you're going to keep sitting with this kind of work. Because if you attribute the agency entirely to the geometry, you might miss what your own nervous system is telling you about what it's ready for regardless of what's on the wall.
