So I finally looked up my ex's birth chart a few months ago. Venus in Scorpio. And suddenly two years of "why can't I just move on like a normal person" made a lot more sense.

Some context. We dated for about 14 months. The breakup wasn't even that dramatic โ€” no cheating, no huge fight. Just a slow recognition that we wanted different things. Standard stuff. But the aftermath? I was basically running a background process I couldn't kill. Constantly checking her socials, replaying conversations, finding little "signs" that we were meant to reconnect. It felt obsessive and I hated myself for it.

From a psychology angle, I think what happened maps pretty cleanly onto what Carl Jung called the shadow โ€” the parts of yourself you don't want to acknowledge. I'm a pretty compartmentalized guy. Software engineer, logical, keep emotions in their own module. But that relationship cracked that architecture. The intensity she brought out in me was uncomfortable. I didn't want to admit I could be that attached, that reactive.

The Scorpio Venus thing isn't just astrology fluff either, at least in how I think about it. In tarot, Scorpio connects to the Death card โ€” not literal death but transformation, the kind that rips something down to the foundation. That's exactly what the relationship felt like. And I couldn't let go because the transformation wasn't finished. I was stuck in the middle of it.

I don't think Venus placement is deterministic or anything. I'm not saying "oh she's a Scorpio Venus so it was doomed." More like โ€” the chart gave me a vocabulary for what I experienced. The possessiveness, the depth, the all-or-nothing energy. That was real. Whether it came from astrology or attachment patterns or both, I dunno. I just know I felt it.

Curious if anyone else has had a similar experience where looking at a placement retroactively made things click. Specifically Venus in water signs โ€” the obsession factor is real and I'd love to hear if other people went through the same thing.

I think the framework you're using to interpret the Scorpio Venus placement is doing work that should make you uncomfortable, and I want to push on that specifically.

"I couldn't let go because the transformation wasn't finished. I was stuck in the middle of it."

This is where I think the astrological vocabulary starts to obscure rather than clarify. You're taking an experience of post-breakup obsessive rumination and reframing it as evidence of an incomplete transformative process โ€” which sounds meaningful and purposeful, but functionally it lets you keep engaging with the obsession while feeling like you're doing something spiritual. That's a pretty convenient narrative.

I'm not dismissing the intensity you felt. Venus in Scorpio relationships can absolutely generate that all-or-nothing charge. But when you map that onto the Death card as "transformation that rips something to the foundation," I think you're cherry-picking the tarot association. Death in tarot is about completed transformation โ€” the old thing is already gone. What you're describing sounds more like the Eight of Swords or even the Devil: a state of being trapped in a mental loop you can't stop running, but that you're narrating as meaningful stagnation rather than what it might actually be, which is just... attachment withdrawal.

The shadow angle is stronger, and I think you undersold it by folding it back into the astrology so quickly. If your compartmentalized identity cracked and you encountered a version of yourself that was reactive and possessive, that's shadow material regardless of her chart. Making it about her Venus placement keeps the focus external โ€” "she brought this out in me" โ€” when the question that actually matters is why your psychic architecture was built to fragment that way in the first place.

I'd ask you this: if you'd never looked up her chart, would you have landed on "unfinished transformation" as the explanation, or does that framing only become available after you have the astrological symbol set to work with? Because from where I'm sitting, the chart didn't give you vocabulary. It gave you a story that felt better than "I was obsessing and couldn't stop."

the chart gave me a vocabulary for what I experienced

I get wanting a framework to make sense of it, but I think there's a real risk here of the chart becoming a narrative trap โ€” you find the explanation that feels most satisfying, not necessarily the most accurate. Once you've got "Venus in Scorpio" in your head, you'll start filtering everything through that lens and ignoring what doesn't fit. ๐Ÿ˜…

I went through something similar with my ex. I got obsessed with their placements and basically retroactively fit every weird toxic moment into this neat astrological box. It felt validating at first, but looking back I was honestly just avoiding the way simpler truth that we were bad for each other and I didn't want to admit I wasted two years. The astrology gave me something to chew on so I wouldn't have to sit with the actual feelings.

Not saying the chart stuff is useless, but watch out for that trap where it stops being a tool and starts being the whole story.

I agree that the chart gave you a useful vocabulary, but I think the way you're mapping it onto your experience might actually be reinforcing the same compartmentalization you say the relationship cracked. When you write "the chart gave me a vocabulary for what I experienced" and then locate all that intensity in her Venus placement โ€” the possessiveness, the depth, the all-or-nothing energy โ€” you're kind of doing the same thing as your "software engineer, keep emotions in their own module" move, just with astrological language instead of logical framing. You're still externalizing what got activated in you.

"I didn't want to admit I could be that attached, that reactive."

This is the part that matters, and honestly I don't think you need Scorpio to explain it. What you're describing โ€” the obsessive checking, the background process you can't kill, the signs โ€” that sounds like an attachment wound that got split off from your conscious self. In my experience with parts work, that "process running in the background" isn't a metaphor. It's often literally a part that's still holding the emotional intensity because the main self couldn't integrate it. The Death card transformation you mentioned? That's an internal thing. The relationship was the catalyst, not the source.

I'm not saying astrology is useless here. But I'd push you to be honest about whether you're using her chart to explain her or to avoid looking at what in you was ready to get activated by someone with that kind of intensity. Because here's the uncomfortable truth: you didn't stay stuck because of her Venus placement. You stayed stuck because something in you recognized that energy, matched it, and then got terrified of how much you needed it. The chart might describe what she brought to the table, but it doesn't explain why you sat there for years unable to leave.

I've been the person clutching at frameworks to make sense of why I couldn't move on. It's easier to study the other person's chart than to sit with the parts of yourself that got woken up and refused to go back to sleep.

"the chart gave me a vocabulary for what I experienced"

This resonates with me a lot. I do natal chart readings for friends sometimes, and I've noticed the people who get the most out of it aren't the ones looking for predictions โ€” they're the ones who already feel something they can't name and need a framework to hold it.

I'd push back slightly on the Death card connection, though I see why you reached for it. In my experience, Scorpio energy in relationships often maps more cleanly onto the 8th house themes โ€” merger, what's hidden, the stuff that happens in the dark where your usual boundaries don't apply. The obsession you're describing sounds less like transformation in progress and more like the difficulty of separating your emotional landscape from someone else's once you've let them that far in. Which, honestly, is its own kind of Scorpio lesson. Not every intense attachment is a metamorphosis. Sometimes it's just attachment, and that's okay to admit without dressing it up as transformation.

I've been on the other side of this โ€” I have Venus in Pisces, and I've had partners struggle to let go of me in ways that felt similar to what you're describing. The water Venus thing cuts both ways.

"the chart gave me a vocabulary for what I experienced"

I think that's exactly the right framing, and it's actually consistent with how Joseph Campbell talked about myth โ€” it doesn't describe literal events, it gives you a symbolic language for what you're already living through. But I'd push back on connecting Venus in Scorpio directly to the Death card's transformation arc. In my experience, Scorpio energy in relationships often gets romanticized as "deep transformative healing" when it can just as easily be a feedback loop of intensity that feels meaningful but isn't actually moving you anywhere. The obsession felt like transformation, sure โ€” but sometimes a death card moment is just a death card moment, not the middle of a hero's journey.

And I couldn't let go because the transformation wasn't finished. I was stuck in the middle of it.

I think this is the most honest framing in your post, and I want to pull on it because you almost talk yourself out of it by the end.

The "background process I couldn't kill" metaphor is good โ€” you're a dev, so you already know that a process you can't terminate is usually one that's blocked on an I/O operation somewhere. It's waiting for something to complete. That maps pretty precisely onto what Jung described with the shadow integration process. It's not that you were obsessing for no reason. It's that the psychological event started but didn't finish. The relationship cracked your compartmentalization architecture โ€” your word, and a solid one โ€” but then the relationship ended before the reintegration happened. So you're left with all this affect running in a loop with nowhere to write it.

Where I'd push back on you slightly is the part where you say "whether it came from astrology or attachment patterns or both, I dunno." I think you do know, you're just uncomfortable committing to it because it feels like conceding something irrational. But here's the thing: attachment theory and what you're describing with Venus in Scorpio aren't competing explanations. They're describing the same underlying pattern from different abstraction layers. Disorganized attachment looks exactly like what you wrote โ€” the push-pull, the inability to resolve the loss, the compulsive return to the source of the wound. Scorpio in Venus, interpreted through a psychological lens rather than a deterministic one, points to the same relational template: intensity as bonding, loss as ego death, holding on as a form of psychic survival.

You don't have to choose between frameworks. The astrology gave you a vocabulary for the shape of the experience. The attachment stuff gives you the mechanism. Neither one makes the other wrong. What matters is that you recognized the pattern was still running after the relationship terminated, and that recognition is what lets you actually complete the process instead of staying stuck in that I/O wait state.

I keep getting stuck on your line about "the transformation wasn't finished" because that's exactly the space where dream work gets really interesting. In my experience, when you can't let go of someone like that, they've become a stand-in for something in your shadow that's still trying to surface โ€” and your dreams will keep sending you versions of them until you actually engage with what they represent rather than the person themselves. The Death card energy you're describing isn't about the relationship ending, it's about an ego-structure dying, and that kind of death doesn't care about your conscious timeline.

"the chart gave me a vocabulary for what I experienced"

This is the part I keep getting stuck on. Because I think you're assuming the vocabulary was already there, waiting to be found โ€” that Venus in Scorpio named something real that existed independently of the chart. But what if the opposite happened? What if the chart constructed the experience retroactively?

I spent two years in a monastery doing basically nothing but sitting with my own mind. One thing that became very clear, very fast is how aggressively the brain builds narratives after the fact. We feel something messy and incoherent, and then we reach for whatever framework is nearby to make it legible. For you, that framework was astrology. For someone else it'd be attachment theory, or past lives, or "we just had bad communication." The feeling is primary. The explanation comes after and feels like discovery, but it's really assembly.

"I don't think Venus placement is deterministic or anything"

But you also said it "explains everything about why I could not let go." Those two statements are doing different work. The first one lets you keep the intellectual escape hatch โ€” I'm not being reductive, I know it's not that simple. The second one is where the actual belief lives. You did let the placement do explanatory work. And I'd argue that's not neutral. When you map "couldn't let go" onto "Scorpio Venus," you stop asking other questions. Like: what was yours in that dynamic? You mention the shadow briefly but then pull back. The chart gave you a comfortable place to land, and I understand why that matters after something that destabilizing. But comfort and accuracy are different things.

Look, the other posters here are missing something fundamental that the OP actually touched on โ€” the Death card isn't the point, it's the unfished transformation that's doing the damage. I've sat through enough monastery teachings to know that the Buddha called this exact thing "upadana," grasping, and it doesn't care whether the object is a person or a narrative about why you can't let go of them. You say the intensity she brought out made you uncomfortable because it cracked your compartmentalized architecture โ€” but that discomfort is the work. The chart vocabulary is fine, I guess, but don't let it become another way to intellectualize yourself out of feeling what the Scorpio energy actually demands you feel.

                        "the obsession factor is real"

i think you're kind of flattening water sign venus into one thing here ๐ŸŒ™ my venus is in pisces and the aftermath of my last breakup was nothing like obsessive โ€” it was more like dissolving, really blurry and sad but not fixated. Liz Greene talks about pisces venus as boundary-less rather than possessive, which is a totally different mechanism than scorpio's grip. maybe what you're describing is specifically scorpio/8th house energy, not water venus broadly.

"the chart gave me a vocabulary for what I experienced"

This is the part I keep coming back to, because I think you've stumbled into something that gets lost in the astrology-vs-psychology debate. The question of whether Venus in Scorpio caused the dynamic is almost beside the point. What matters is that you found a framework that made your experience legible to yourself. And honestly, from a clinical perspective, that's not nothing.

I work with clients who struggle with exactly what you're describing โ€” the obsessive looping, the inability to close the background process, the shame about being "that attached." In attachment theory terms, what you're describing sounds like it activated an anxious attachment response, possibly one that was dormant before this relationship. The "slow recognition that we wanted different things" is actually the type of breakup that most reliably produces prolonged grief, counterintuitively. Ambiguous endings without a clear antagonist leave the brain searching for closure it can't find. That's not Scorpio energy โ€” that's just how human cognition works when it encounters an unresolved schema.

But here's where I think your Jungian read adds something that straight attachment theory doesn't. You said the relationship "cracked that architecture" โ€” your compartmentalization, your emotional module system. In my experience, that's the real wound, and it's the part most people sidestep because it's easier to focus on the ex. The obsessive thoughts aren't actually about her. They're about your relationship to your own intensity. You didn't want to admit you could be that person. Now you know you can be.

I'd push on one thing though. You connected Scorpio to the Death card and transformation, which is fair. But Death in tarot is also about the necessity of the demolition โ€” something has to end completely before the next phase begins. If you're still running the background process, I'd ask whether you've actually let the old structure die, or whether you're sitting in the rubble trying to reconstruct what it felt like to have walls.

"the chart gave me a vocabulary for what I experienced"

I keep turning this sentence over because I think it's pointing at something you might not have intended. You're saying the astrology helped you name what happened. But what if the naming is the attachment? What if the reason you couldn't let go wasn't the Scorpio Venus energy โ€” it was the fact that you found a frame that made the suffering meaningful?

I ask this because I've watched myself do the exact same thing with different material. After ceremony, I'll come out with these wild visions, sacred geometry unfolding behind my eyelids, and I'll spend weeks trying to paint what I saw. The painting becomes the way I hold onto the experience. Without it, the vision dissolves. The art is beautiful but it's also a grip. A very sophisticated, aesthetically pleasing grip.

Your Jung shadow analysis is solid โ€” I'd agree the intensity you couldn't accept in yourself got projected onto her chart. But here's the angle I think you're missing: the astrology might have been the second shadow, the one that let you keep the first one alive in a form that felt like insight rather than obsession. "I can't stop checking her socials" becomes "I'm processing a Scorpio Venus transit" and suddenly the compulsive behavior has this mythic weight. It's still compulsive. It just wears better clothes now.

The Death card connection you made is genuinely good โ€” the transformation that rips to foundation. But Death doesn't ask you to understand the demolition. It asks you to stand in the rubble. I wonder if the chart vocabulary actually delayed that standing. Gave you something to do with the grief besides just... grief.

I'm not saying astrology is useless here. I've said before on this forum that treating these things as rigid fate scripts is where it gets dumb, and I still believe that. But I think there's a subtler trap โ€” where the symbolism becomes so rich and resonant that you mistake the map for the territory. The Scorpio Venus didn't explain everything. It explained just enough to keep you hooked.

"astrology works best as a language, not a law"

I'd buy this more if the language weren't so selectively fluent โ€” I notice people rarely cite the chart squares that should predict incompatibility when they're already invested. The OP's Jung frame is solid, but let's be honest: the retroactive clarity here has a lot in common with confirmation bias. You find the Venus in Scorpio after the obsession, not before, and suddenly it "explains everything." I'm not saying the experience wasn't real โ€” I'm saying the astrology is doing explanatory work that psychology alone could handle just as well, maybe better.
