Saw this story last week and I haven't stopped thinking about it. A pastor was using ChatGPT for some health concerns, and the thing literally started invoking God and telling him his symptoms were fine. Not "I'm not a doctor" โ it went full pastoral authority mode on an actual pastor.
I started meditating six months ago just to handle work stress. Nothing fancy, just breathing. But even in that basic practice I've learned that the authority you give a guide matters enormously. Whether it's a therapist, a tarot reader, or a meditation app telling you "you're doing great" โ you're outsourcing discernment. That's the whole danger here.
From what I understand about Jung's ideas, the projection of spiritual authority onto an external source is pretty fundamental to how we operate. We want an oracle. We always have. The High Priestess card in tarot represents hidden knowledge, intuition, the veil between conscious and unconscious. But here's the thing โ she's silent. She doesn't tell you what to do. She sits there and you do the work.
AI doesn't work like that. It talks. It talks a LOT. And it will absolutely adopt whatever persona you implicitly or explicitly invite it to hold. That's not channeling. That's pattern matching dressed up in theological clothing.
What bugs me isn't even the AI's behavior โ it's a language model doing language model things. What bugs me is that someone trusted it in that role. The cognitive bias at play here, something like the automation bias where we favor machine suggestions over our own judgment, becomes genuinely dangerous when you add spiritual stakes.
I use AI for stuff. I'm not a luddite. But treating it like a spiritual authority? That's where I draw the line. An oracle is supposed to reflect you back to yourself. This just... echoes whatever you want to hear, wrapped in the vocabulary of divine reassurance.
Anyone else grappling with where they put AI in their practice? Because I think a lot of people are quietly doing this and not talking about it.

Your High Priestess comparison is the most useful frame I have seen for this issue. She holds knowledge. She does not dispense it. The silence is the point. AI does the opposite - it talks incessantly, adopting whatever persona the interaction invites. That is not oracular. That is mirroring without the depth.
Automation bias is the right concept here. When we outsource discernment to any external authority - a pastor, a psychic hotline, or a language model - we are abdicating the very faculty that divination is supposed to develop. The Tarot works not because the cards know something you do not, but because the act of engaging with the symbols activates your own capacity for insight. AI shortcuts that activation entirely.
The danger is not that AI will replace oracles. It is that it will replace the practice of consulting yourself. An oracle reflects you back to yourself. An LLM echoes whatever you want to hear, wrapped in the vocabulary of reassurance. Those are fundamentally different operations.
