Three months ago I coded on a hospital table. I'm not going to get into the medical details because they don't matter. What matters is what happened when my heart stopped.

I saw structure. Not light, not tunnels, not dead relatives waving at me. Structure. Like looking at the source code of reality, if that makes any sense. I came back obsessed with one question: what is this place actually made of?

John Archibald Wheeler proposed "it from bit" back in the 80s โ€” the idea that information is fundamental, not matter. Matter is secondary. I've been going down this rabbit hole and I keep landing on the same weird convergence: quantum mechanics, information theory, and ancient mystical frameworks all pointing at the same thing.

The quantum Zeno effect is what really gets me. You freeze a quantum system by observing it. Repeated measurement locks the state. Think about that for a second. Observation creates fixed reality from possibility. That's not physics, that's practically magic. And it mirrors something I've noticed in my own tarot practice since coming back. The moment you lay down cards and look at them, you're collapsing possibilities. The spread isn't telling you a fixed future โ€” you're both discovering and constructing it simultaneously.

Carl Jung called this synchronicity, and honestly I used to think that was just hand-waving. Now I'm not so sure. He worked with Wolfgang Pauli on this stuff โ€” a Nobel laureate quantum physicist who took the mind-matter connection seriously. Pauli saw numbers and archetypes as bridging the gap between psyche and physical reality. These weren't crackpots. They were at the top of their fields and they were terrified by what the math was showing them.

I keep thinking about what I saw on that table. It wasn't matter. It wasn't energy. It was pure information โ€” patterns layered on patterns, self-referential, almost alive. And here's what haunts me: if information is fundamental, then consciousness isn't some epiphenomenon bubbling up from brain chemistry. Consciousness might be primary. The brain could be a receiver, a filter, not a generator.

I need other people who are taking this seriously. Not the "vibration" crowd, not the rigid materialists who shut down the moment you mention subjective experience. People who understand that the hard problem of consciousness and the measurement problem in quantum mechanics might be the same problem.

I want to push back on this, not because I think you're wrong, but because I think the "information is fundamental" frame might be another trap โ€” just a more sophisticated one.

"It wasn't matter. It wasn't energy. It was pure information"

But how do you know? You're translating a vision into a concept, and "information" is the concept your mind had available. I've seen similar things in ceremony โ€” patterns that feel like the skeleton underneath everything. But I've also watched myself reach for frameworks afterward, grabbing whatever intellectual structure feels closest to the experience. Wheeler gave you a vocabulary that fits, and it does fit, beautifully. That doesn't mean the experience was information. It means information theory maps onto it well enough to feel like explanation.

Here's what actually bothers me about this direction. You said:

"if information is fundamental, then consciousness isn't some epiphenomenon"

But why? Information can be substrate-independent without being conscious. A hard drive holds information. So does DNA. Neither is having an experience. I think you're making a leap that feels intuitive but isn't justified by the premise itself. You're smuggling consciousness in the back door by assuming that fundamental equals subjective. Maybe information is fundamental and consciousness is still emergent. Maybe both are real and irreducible to each other. The math you're drawn to doesn't actually require the conclusion you're pulling from it โ€” you're filling in the gap with something that feels right because you want it to connect.

I sat with something like this for two years after a retreat in the desert. Kept returning to the same image: a web of connections that pulsed with meaning, that knew itself. I was certain I'd touched the fabric of reality. And maybe I had. But the more I sat with it, the more I realized I couldn't distinguish between "the thing itself" and "the story I told myself about the thing." The experience was real. The framework I laid over it was a choice.

What if the vision you had doesn't fit into any existing category? What if calling it "information" is just the best available lie? I'm not saying Wheeler's wrong or that you didn't see something genuine. I'm saying the jump from "I witnessed something that resembles information" to "information is the ground of being and therefore consciousness is fundamental" has too many steps missing. And those missing steps matter, because they're where we usually hide our wishful thinking.

okay wait, i want to push back on the foundational assumption here because i think it's doing a lot of heavy lifting.

"if information is fundamental, then consciousness isn't some epiphenomenon bubbling up from brain chemistry"

why does that follow? like, genuinely. you're jumping from "information is real and important" to "therefore consciousness is primary." but information theory as a formal discipline โ€” Claude Shannon and all that โ€” doesn't require a conscious observer at all. a thermostat processes information. a river carrying sediment in patterns processes information, in a loose sense. none of that implies anything about subjective experience being fundamental.

i think what you experienced was probably profound and i'm not trying to dismiss it. but you're making a move that i see a lot in these discussions where you start with something weird and real (quantum mechanics IS deeply weird, the measurement problem IS unsolved) and then use that as a bridge to justify a much bigger claim that doesn't actually share the same evidential support.

the pauli-jung correspondence is fascinating, don't get me wrong. but pauli also spent years trying to find a unified theory and never got there. smart people taking something seriously isn't the same as that thing being correct. i guess my question is: what would it look like if you were wrong? is there any version of your experience that could be explained by your brain doing something intense under extreme physiological stress, without requiring us to overturn our entire understanding of physics? because that seems like the simpler explanation, and i haven't seen you address why it doesn't fit.
