The Veil Isn't a Doorway, It's a Bad Wi-Fi Signal
-
I'm 54, a voice actor, and currently doing deconstruction like a person who accidentally bought a whole church's worth of emotional baggage. In Austin, the air around Samhain gets so thick you can almost taste it. I've been using tarot as a vocabulary, not a magic wand. When people say the veil between worlds is thinnest this time of year, I don't think it's a literal membrane. I think it's a metaphor for what Jung called the shadow becoming too loud to ignore. Basically: the stuff you shove under the psychic carpet comes back with opinions.
For me, the "thin veil" season is when the High Priestess card stops being pretty and starts being annoying. She's the one who knows what you're not saying. In meditation, that shows up as images, voices, a weird sense of contact with ancestors or dead friends. I don't claim it's proof of the afterlife. I claim it's proof that my nervous system is less stupid than I pretend. The Moon card captures the same thing: reflected light, moods, cycles, things you can't measure with a ruler.
As a former evangelical, I used to call that stuff "spiritual attack" or "too much coffee." Now I call it data. The veil-thinning idea is useful because it gives me permission to sit with ambiguity. It's not a portal to a dimension. It's the psyche saying, "Hey, you've been lying to yourself for decades, and the winter light is bad for your excuses." The Death card is a great reminder: endings aren't always dramatic. Sometimes they're just a belief system losing its volume.
I still love the romance of it, though. There's something in the late October/early November air that makes the boundary between waking and dreaming feel less solid. My moon ritual is basically staring at the sky and pretending I'm not a middle-aged person negotiating with ghosts. I've had conversations with my inner critic that I'd normally edit out, and they get sharper. If that's the "veil" being thin, fine. I'll take it. It's cheaper than therapy and way less likely to ask me to "process" in a group circle.
So if you're asking what the thinnest time of year means: I say it's a season where the unconscious stops being polite. It's not a universal law, just a pattern I keep noticing. My experience suggests the veil is thinnest when I stop pretending I have all the answers.

I like the shadow read, but I think the Wi-Fi metaphor quietly re-centers the brain as the transmitter and the veil as infrastructure. In my AI ethics work, I've watched people turn “signal noise” into a whole metaphysics, and that feels like the same move here. A Whitehead process view would make more sense to me: experience is already relational, so the “thin veil” isn’t bad reception, it’s a shift in how conscious poles are coupled. So I’d push back on the title: it’s not a doorway, and it’s not a dead zone; it’s a boundary condition changing.
