I’ve been thinking about this since a group meditation in Manchester went weird in the best way. We were doing a breath-synchronisation thing, and for a few minutes it genuinely felt like the room was breathing together. Not mystical in a glossy way. More like: yeah, bodies can pick up on each other.

I keep seeing people use “mirror neurons” like it’s proof that group meditation is some kind of universal healing tech. I’m not buying the oversell. The idea comes from Giacomo Rizzolatti and colleagues’ work on macaque monkeys, and the human picture is way more complicated than “we all just vibrate the same when we sit quietly.” That matters to me, because when I work in spaces that mix spirituality with social justice, the moment we turn a nervous system response into a miracle, we stop asking who’s uncomfortable, who’s excluded, and who gets to leave.

From my experience, group meditation can be powerful. It can also be a very polite way to say, “Be present, not political.” I remember reading somewhere, probably in a journal like Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, about group meditation and physiological synchrony, but I don’t remember the exact authors, so I won’t pretend I do. What I do remember is that the science is promising, not finished. And that’s exactly why I try to keep the language careful: the body can be a bridge, but it isn’t a permission slip to flatten difference.
