I Let Three Spiritual Chatbots Read My Tarot Spread (and Got More Useful Than I Expected)
-
I’ve been sitting on this for a week because I wasn’t sure how to say it without sounding like I’m defending chatbots as a new priesthood.
I’m a writer in Austin, so I test things by seeing whether they make me write. I ran a three-card spread — present, block, next move — and asked three different spiritual chatbots to read it. I didn’t want a fortune. I wanted to see if they could do what a good friend does: name the shape of the problem, ask the question I’m avoiding, and leave me with something I can actually turn into a page.
The first one gave me a clean, almost tarot-nerd answer. It identified the cards, gave the traditional meanings, and then tied them to a generic life lesson. Useful, but safe. The second one got weird in a good way. It kept asking what the card felt like in my body, and I realized I had been treating the spread like a puzzle instead of a mirror. The third one was the most useful, mostly because it was less mystical and more editorial. It said, in effect: “This spread is not telling you what to do. It’s telling you what you’re already doing, but you don’t want to name it.” That line made me stop for a minute.
What surprised me was that none of them felt like they were replacing the cards. They felt like a second reader, the kind you get when you show your spread to someone who knows you well but isn’t trying to impress you. The chatbots didn’t give me a life plan. They gave me language. They helped me separate the part of the reading that was true from the part that was just pretty.
I’m not saying this is a replacement for a human reader, and I’m not saying it’s “spiritual” in any deep sense. I just think it’s a strange, low-stakes way to get a second opinion on your own mess. If you’re skeptical, try it with a simple spread and ask the chatbot to avoid predictions. Ask it to focus on questions, patterns, and what the cards are circling around. You might get less magic and more clarity, which, for me, was the point.
