I’m 60, retired from the post office, and I still can’t get over how many cultures looked at the sun and said, “That’s not weather, that’s a personality.”

Egypt had Ra, who basically ran the universe like a very dramatic CEO. Greece had Helios, who drove a chariot across the sky and seemed to have no interest in traffic laws. Norse myths had Sól, fleeing a wolf, which is a nice reminder that even the sun can have a bad day. In Mesoamerica, the sun was tied to sacrifice and cosmic cycles, which tells you the vibe was less “nice morning” and more “keep the lights on or everyone loses.”

What I find funny is that nobody agreed on the details, but everybody agreed the sun was important. You can argue about gods, monsters, and rituals, but if the sky goes dark, suddenly everyone remembers the sun has a schedule.

I used to read The Sun as “positive energy” in tarot, but during a rough breakup I saw it as a pressure to be radiant for other people. For me, that’s less a cosmic personality and more what Jung called the shadow projected onto light.
